What we need in this house is two monitors and keyboards connected to the same CPU so more than one person can use the computer at once. Is this possible? Nope, CPU can't deal with that... Two computers is far better... Just another soggy Seattle Sysop. -----Original Message----- From: Jean White [mailto:jphwhite@ns.sympatico.ca] Sent: Wednesday, January 23, 2002 11:43 AM To: GEN-FRIENDS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEN-FRIENDS] Gadgets. Computers came in to the very tail end of my working life. In the school office, in 1995, we had just got 386s, with green screens, and I had managed to teach myself word processing - it was not the policy to train office staff because the training might enable them to go and work somewhere else for more money. Anyway, we only had one computer in the office, and the Assistant Bursar had one in the office next door, and that's where the shared printer was. Talk about murder! We were supposed to tell her when we wanted to print something, so she could throw a switch, otherwise we printed our letters etc., out on her official, numbered order forms! Most of the mistakes in this direction were made by another secretary (not me) who was also inclined to walk in and close the computer down without bothering to save your work on it. She's still alive, too, no one killed her, although I was tempted a few times. How maddening it was when you would see teachers go out in the lunch hour and come back with all sorts of new computers, printers etc., for the kids to use, and we were expected to struggle along. It was such a short-sighted attitude, because when I retired I went on a course for my own benefit, and all I could think was how much more effectively I could have done my job if I'd been able to make databases etc. My computer at work never even had a mouse!
