Where is everybody? Has a strike been declared and I know nothing about it or has everyone gone on holiday? Pam A woman decided to have her portrait painted. Thank you for putting my mind at rest ! I have been racking my brains to remember the name of the actor who played the part of PC 49 ; I thought that his surname was Reece but could not recall the Christian name. Hi Marj The evening was quite good, most of the conversation was a mix of English & French. Two others from my class went & we all agreed our French was better than the others - apart from the 3 French women there! The food was good too, 2 chefs amongst the guests so the nibbles etc were well worth going for. And what a lovely house, we go every week but only see one room, last night we were in the upstairs drawing room. It's a large Victorian mid terrace with all the stripped pine & subtle decor. Bit of money there somewhere me thinks. Green with envy. Anyway it was what I term a very grown up party - polite chat & no getting drunk & rolling around the kitchen. I liked the kitchen too it had an Aga which is another of my dreams. I met up with my 3rd & 4th cousins in the afternoon & we all feel like we've known each other ages. The wonders of the Internet & email! None of us have got beyond our brick walls with our joint ancestors though. I don't run my home or family - it all tends to happen around me at the moment. I seem to be very disorganised of late, my life is for living, the more mundane chores will keep until they start screaming at me! Sue S > That Soiree sounds lovely! The Americans and Russians at the height of the arms race realized that if they continued in the usual manner they were going to blow up the whole world. One day they sat down and decided to settle the whole dispute with one dog fight. They'd have five years to breed the best fighting dog in the world and which ever side's dog won would be entitled to dominate the world. The losing side would have to lay down its arms. The Russians found the biggest meanest Doberman and Rottweiler dogs in the world and bred them with the biggest meanest Siberian wolves. They selected only the biggest and strongest puppy from each litter, killed his siblings, and gave him all the milk. They used steroids and trainers and after five years came up with the biggest meanest dog the world had ever seen. Its cage needed steel bars that were five inches thick and nobody could get near it. When the day came for the fight, the Americans showed up with a strange animal. It was a nine foot long Dachshund. Everyone felt sorry for the Americans because they knew there was no way that this dog could possibly last ten seconds with the Russian dog. When the cages were opened up, the Dachshund came out and wrapped itself around the outside of the ring. It had the Russian dog almost completely surrounded. When the Russian dog leaned over to bite the Dachshund's neck, the Dachshund reached out and consumed the Russian dog in one bite. There was nothing left at all of the Russian dog. The Russians came up to the Americans shaking their heads in disbelief. 'We don't understand how this could have happened. We had our best people working for five years with the meanest Doberman and Rottweiler bitches in the world and the biggest meanest Siberian wolves." "That's nothing", an American replied. "We had our best plastic surgeons working for five years to make an alligator look like a Dachshund." --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Brian Staffordshire, UK List Admin ----- Original Message ----- From: "mikemail" <michael@ae.net.sa> To: <GEN-FRIENDS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 29, 2002 8:50 AM Subject: [GEN-FRIENDS] Re: PC 49 et al > The actor was Brian Reece if I remember and PC49 also featured in some comic, although my favourite was Black Bob and Andrew Glenn - lively sketches of Bob jumping over dry stone walls in pursuit of the robbers. I note that in the 80's this was successfully satirised by Viz magazine and renamed The Black Plastic Bin Liner - very droll. > > Mike > ----- Original Message ----- > From: davspark > To: mikemail ; GEN-FRIENDS-L@rootsweb.com > Sent: Wednesday, May 29, 2002 12:34 AM > Subject: PC 49 > > > I remember that PC 49 rejoiced in the wonderful name of Archibald Berkeley > Willoughby > Perhaps for the benefit of our friends fro across the water I ought to > mention that PC 49 was a radio programme from the 1950's about a bungling > Police Constable who had a catch phrase "Bless my Sunday helmet !" > > David > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "mikemail" <michael@ae.net.sa> > To: <GEN-FRIENDS-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, May 28, 2002 7:22 AM > Subject: Re: [GEN-FRIENDS] Brian has sent you a digital photo! > > > No doubt for PC49 - remember him? > > Mike > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Brian > To: GEN-FRIENDS-L@rootsweb.com > Sent: Tuesday, May 28, 2002 1:31 AM > Subject: Re: [GEN-FRIENDS] Brian has sent you a digital photo! > > > Whitehall 1212 [if your memory is good].
