Had a memory jog today reading The Telegraph - a feature about the Jubilee mentioned a record which was popular at the time A Golden Coach sung by Dickie Valentine - we had this disc but I guess I never heard of it until now. I did have awonderful model of the Coronation Coach, which was quite expensive at the time and now worth a lot of money. Well we are lucky, we've only been married 7 years in June. Both lost our previous spouses, mine with cancer, Toms wife with an overnight heart attack. We are going up in anniversaries at a ratio of 5 to 1 so that we may get a golden anniversary in, currently reaching 35th, reckon that's the only way we'll get it. We say we have 91 years of marriage between us. Tom 43, me 41 and us 7 = 91 years. :-) Life is now being very good to us! Your anonymous friend, with the strange name of Grace/Beth/Barbara
More bad news to report today, I'm starting to feel like I'm in a bad dream. A tornado touched down in Pittsburgh, inside of an amusement park (about the size of Six Flags). The park has been the site for the tri-county areas' school picnics for well over 50 years. Today was our school district's day (I guess over 2000 families), along with two other large school districts. So far there has been one confirmed dead (eight year old little girl) 12 children are in surgery at our Children's Hospital, and atleast 60 others injured. The place looks like a war zone, amusement rides collapsed, roofs ripped off of pavilions, cars over turned, etc. Praise the Lord, we didn't go today, probably only the fourth time in my life that I've missed the school picnic. Last nite the weather report was calling for thunder storms, this morning's weather report said the same so Tom told me it was my decision to make. I chose to stay home even though I felt so guilty about having the boys miss it. The tornado continued on its path and came within a mile of my house. It's the first time in my life that I had to grab the kids, the pets and run for the basement. We're still waiting word on the victims, no names have been released yet and it's been over five hours. Hello Mike, We are in South Australia, about 25 ks, from Adelaide. We too get very hot weather in Summer but all airconditioned, the heat is usually between late November through to March. At the moment it is autumn, well tomorrow is the official winter period, and the days have been quite lovely. I still find the heat in summer very exhausting although we get minimal humid days, thank goodness. Don't think I could handle your temperatures. regards, Grace

We will be paying for it to be renovated and will find a suitable home for it in due course. __________________________________________________________________ Rob Dewsall returned the Middlesex directories to The Barnet Archives, along with copies of the CD's. They had had a chance to look through some of the twenty or so other CD's we donated to them last week and they were very impressed indeed. They had been searching for original copies of the 1902 London directories for years without success, now they have them on CD. Rob Dewsall writes : I spoke yesterday to David Knott, the head of collections at Reading University Library. He has agreed to allow us access to both their open shelves and their closed collections and in return we will pay for the restoration of any books which have become sufficiently dilapidated to require it. With regard to the closed collections this is especially important as it means that previously unavailable books and records will now be made available on CD to genealogists, historians and students all over the world. The Library will also receive copies of any of our CD's that they require and they hope to make these available over their network, thus aiding their own students and readers in their research. I am *very* excited about this new project as they have some *extremely* rare and interesting books and these will start to appear on CD in the near future. Full credit is due to one of our supporters, Barbara Watts, for introducing David Knott to The Archive CD Books Project. Paul Gaskell writes : I'm pleased to report that Archive CD Books have kindly donated a copy of this book on CD to this society :- The Burford Records A Study in Minor Town Government by R H Gretton This is an eighteenth century book, which comes in three distinct sections :- 1. History of the corporation of Burford. 2. Studies in the history of Burford. 3. Calendar of Burford records. There then follows a general index, index of persons and index of places. This CD will be freely available for users of the society's reference library at the Holford Centre from Tuesday onwards. The Holford Centre is now open *every* Tuesday, on the third Saturday of every month and on one "ad hoc" Sunday per month.
