Really, Marj, I'm surprised at you! Actually, I'm only joking. I would probably have done the same. My attitude would have been, "No bloody foreigner is going to tell me what to eat!" and I would have paid the price. My parents only ever went abroad once and that was to spend Christmas with me in Germany in 1965 or 66. Dad went everywhere shouting bl***y foreigners. He nearly got us hanged. We weren't all that far from the Belsen Cemetery but I didn't dare take him there, there would have been an international incident. Funny thing was, once he was home he went round telling everyone about his new German friends and saying Gütten Tag and aufwiedersehn to everyone. We were on holiday in Paris. We ate a few times at a little Bistro that Don had found in a tour guide - "Le Stade", just behind the Louvre. One day, I decided to order Steack Tartare, but the waiter shook his finger at me and warned me to order the Steack au Poivre instead, so I did. On our last morning, we went there for one last lunch, and I said to Don "I am having Steack Tartare if it kills me" and it nearly did. I managed to insist, with my limited French, upon having this dish, and the man did his level best to talk me out of it with his limited English and many gallic shrugs. Then he brought me my lunch, and as you probably realise already, Steack Tartare consists of a plate of cold, raw, minced beef, served with a raw egg (served in half its shell) with capers and an array of hot sauces (including sauce tartare). Well, what could I do but watch what other diners did with it; I mixed the raw egg into the mince, mixed it with the capers (which I hate) and sauces, and ate three quarters of it. Taught me a lesson. By the way, that's the French way of spelling Steack. Marj --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Computers came in to the very tail end of my working life. In the school office, in 1995, we had just got 386s, with green screens, and I had managed to teach myself word processing - it was not the policy to train office staff because the training might enable them to go and work somewhere else for more money. Anyway, we only had one computer in the office, and the Assistant Bursar had one in the office next door, and that's where the shared printer was. Talk about murder! We were supposed to tell her when we wanted to print something, so she could throw a switch, otherwise we printed our letters etc., out on her official, numbered order forms! Most of the mistakes in this direction were made by another secretary (not me) who was also inclined to walk in and close the computer down without bothering to save your work on it. She's still alive, too, no one killed her, although I was tempted a few times. How maddening it was when you would see teachers go out in the lunch hour and come back with all sorts of new computers, printers etc., for the kids to use, and we were expected to struggle along. It was such a short-sighted attitude, because when I retired I went on a course for my own benefit, and all I could think was how much more effectively I could have done my job if I'd been able to make databases etc. My computer at work never even had a mouse! I have BT call minder and don't pay anything - got the number to ring for installation from the television advert. The only trouble is that it doesn't ring you up to tell you you have calls waiting, like yours probably does, Roz. As I hardly ever remember to check to see if there are any calls waiting, ................... However, I would not call anyone's mobile unless I thought it was a matter of life and death. My last phone bill was £117.62. This was for 2 telephones. My actual call costs were £31.39, and they would have been £8.50 less if I had not telephoned a friend on her mobile while she was on line trying to install BT as her ISP! Another big charge was £7.39 for ringing the BT help line at great expense on behalf of the above friend. Never again! The bill for my second telephone bill was £25.50 and that's the total quarterly charge for your second line. I don't make calls on that phone and I don't have any coming in, although I could if I wanted to. Don't ask my where the free phone line comes in, I know this doesn't sound like I am getting anything for nothing! Marj All you have to do is use your mobile phone. Put on bt call minder....costs £2 a month (I think but I get it free with my business line) and you can leave a message telling people to ring your mobile as you are on another call or leave a message. That's what I do.
