    3. Hi All, Does anyone have a copy of the 1851 Census index of Liverpool? I believe it is available on CD for £25 from the Liverpool FHS but before I go and buy it I thought I would ask if any of you kind souls have it. If so could someone extract the HALL families for me please? I realize I've got a big search on my hands and I shall have to order films in at the LDS Library but it has got to be done. So any help with this index would be appreciated. Thanks Pam. 2. Pamela Cotton
    3. THAT FIRST KISS At the end of their first date, a young man takes his favorite girl home. Emboldened by the night, he decides to try for that important first kiss. With an air of confidence, he leans with his hand against the wall and, smiling, he says to her, "Darling, how 'bout a goodnight kiss?" Horrified, she replies, "Are you mad? My parents will see us!" "Oh come on! Who's gonna see us at this hour?" "No, please. Can you imagine if we get caught?" "Oh come on, there's nobody around, they're all sleeping!" "No way. It's just too risky!" "Oh please, please, I like you so much!!" "No, no, and no. I like you too, but I just can't!" "Oh yes you can. Please?" "NO, no. I just can't." "Pleeeeease?..." Out of the blue, the porch light goes on, and the girl's sister shows up in her pajamas, hair disheveled. In a sleepy voice the sister says: "Dad says to go ahead and give him a kiss. Or I can do it. Or if need be, he'll come down himself and do it. But for crying out loud tell him to take his hand off the intercom button!" --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I have a program that will allow me to send pictures to Gen-Friends, so if anyone would like to take advantage of it, send your pictures to me and I will forward them for you. It's a grey day here in England, which is surprising after all the sunshine we've had recently, but as Don says, we do need it for the gardens. Marj --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Marged! Enjoyed reading your note about La Rochelle..and I could just see you 'settling down there' as I know how very much you have enjoyed ALL your visits to France over the years. You are right about the King sending the young girls over to 'New France'...Quebec/Canada...in order to quickly increase the population so that 'further income' from this 'new land' would eventually go back to France. I have found quite a bit about this from the internet...and compiled same for my 'Family Tree' notes of interest. Frances __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 3. Hi Sue Yes, it is a long drive to La Rochelle, whichever ferry you take. One year we were meant to sail to St Malo, and we took the whole day to drive down, stopping off for lunch and tea with Don's brother in Windsor. We arrived at the ferry port just in time to see our ship set sail - we had misunderstood the 24 hour clock. Don't ask me how - we have always known it. Thought we had to be there for a 10 pm sailing, and it was an 8 pm sailing (20.00 hours) They put us on the next sailing to Caen, at midnight, which was a shorter route to La Rochelle. We have done the same route again since then, but it is a long way, especially with children. Whenever we arrive at La Rochelle, it seems as though the skies clear and the sun comes out, even though it has been raining all the way en route. It is a MAGICAL place for me. 3. You could be right about them sailing from La Rochelle Frances, as there is a waxworks museum there giving the full story of how girls were sent from La Rochelle at the time of the Revolution, in order for them to marry soldiers serving in Canada and possibly America too. They were given one golden Louis, probably worth quite a lot of money, to set themselves up for their new lives. I probably have lots of pictures of La Rochelle, as we have spent quite a few holidays there. It's a city really, probably the same size as Southport where I live (which is NOT a city, it's a town). The same size population, about 100,000. I can visualise myself living there as it is a REAL place and not like a lot of the nice little villages in Brittany where people only come for the summer months. I know people will have sailed from La Rochelle during the whole of the 18th century. Marj > > Would you have any pictures of there..?? 3. There's one built-in in the front bedroom upstairs, which was once my mother's room. I will try and remember to take a picture of that. It's only narrow, but it is from ceiling to floor books. Again, they are nice volumes. In the back bedroom there is a big bookcase full of mainly paperbacks, novels etc., and on the landing a small one with paperbacks and videos we don't use very often. It's a wonder the floors don't collapse. MY music CDs are consigned to the hall downstairs, with all the videos I keep for the children. Don's CDs take pride of place in the front room next to the CD player! And sitting on top of the big collection of vinyls, for which we recently bought a new turntable to go with the CD player. 3. I think you are right Frances and these things should be treated as furniture. I like to keep everything to hand, otherwise I forget about them! In my picture, there is a little bureau just peeping in from the left. Don made that when he was in college in 1958. 3. Historical Darwins 1994 Darwin Award Nominee Confirmed True by Darwin Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I embarked on the 3rd Crusade to recapture the Holy Land in the twelfth century. After spending days trudging across the dry summer desert, his army came upon the River Saleph. In his parched state, Frederick threw caution to the wind -- instead of his heavy armor -- and plunged into the river, whereupon he sank to the bottom and drowned. <><><><><><><> Attila the Hun was one of the most notorious villains in history. He conquered all of Asia by 450 A.D. by destroying villages and pillaging the countryside. This bloodthirsty man died from a nosebleed on his wedding night. After feasting and toasting his own good fortune, he was too drunk to notice his nose, and he drowned in a snoutful of his own blood. <><><><><><><><><><><> Tycho Brahe, a sixteenth-century Danish astronomer whose research helped Sir Isaac Newton devise the theory of gravity, died because he didn’t make it to the bathroom in time. In that society it was considered an insult to leave the table before the banquet was over. Brahe forgot to relieve himself before the banquet began, then exacerbated matters by imbibing too much alcohol at dinner. Too polite to ask to be excused, he instead allowed his bladder to burst, which killed him slowly and painfully over the next eleven days. <><><><><>><><><>><> Francis Bacon was an influential statesman, philosopher, writer, and scientist in the sixteenth century. He died while stuffing snow into a chicken. He had been struck by the notion that snow instead of salt might be used to preserve meat. To test his theory he stood outside in the snow and attempted to stuff the bird. The chicken didn’t freeze, but Bacon did, prompting the question “Which froze first? The Bacon or the egg?” <><><><><><><><><>><> Jean-Baptiste Lully, a seventeenth-century composer who wrote music for the king of France, died from an overdose of “musical enthusiasm.” While rehearsing for a concert, he became overexcited and drove his baton right through his foot.
