My knees are certainly week so that I can't lower myself slowly. I get to a point when I just have to let go and end up often sitting with a thump. But my main problem is arthritis in my spine which is aggravated by frequently trapped nerves and dicky hips. My cottage has 11 which makes them much steeper. I'd be better abseiling. I currently travel down sideways but even so have missed the last one twice so far. Right opposite the bottom step is a wall where you need to turn right and it is very hard if you don't do that! Hi again Bubbles! Yes...I do have trouble with my knees in that they my walking is 'quite stiff' when I get up in the morning..and/or if I'm sitting too long during the days..i.e., at the computer...good movie on TV... or reading for several hours. Also, my back can give me the same 'problem' for the above noted reasons...sometimes going into 'muscale spasms' ..but, thankfully that does not happen too much nowadays...Had a lot of problems in that way.. before my back surgery...many years ago. As I say..I do find that 'going down the stairs backwards' is most helpful at thest times..My brother has had a lot of problems the last 2 yrs. and 'did not believe this backward down the stairs' would be 'of any use'...even when I told him how Mom 'swore by it'...BUT..then one day he tried it!! (stubborn fella he is ..ha ha) and "voila"...gee..it really does work!! he now says.. I feel that it is because one does not get that 'heavy jolt..at least it seems to feel that way.. when your legs/knees are stiff' ..and so much easier to 'manage the stairs' until we get them loosened up! Nice chatting with you Bubbles.... Frances.. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi Brian..and also..Bubbles! Have just read your note about the 'ten minutes it takes to get downstairs Brian'...after resting and/or sitting awhile...and your total agreement Bubbles! Just wanted to add that I also have the same problem...due to the knees...and general stiffness when I first get up in the A.M., or, after sitting for a little longer than I should....Thought you might like to try my "Method" of handling the stairs 'problem'....which my Mom 'found out' did the trick..and so of course...like mother like daughter!....Anyway, give it a go!.... Turn around at the top of the stairs...hold on to the bannister/railing, bend a little forward to be able to touch the stairs with your other hand, and thus go down the stairs..one at a time!...in the backward position....It is very much easier on the knees and ankles...no 'jolting'...and also gives a more 'secure' feeling of not falling.... Oh yes, I count each stair as I go...to be sure I don't miss the last one...and perhaps have a bit of a fall..or..twist of the ankle.... Hope it works for each of you as well as it does for me! Oh Jan....I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad's fall which leaves one so shook up at the best of times...but, to then be robbed by 'these roving bands of no good useless youths'...(as I refer to them)...would certainly leave the poor dear so frightened.. Do hope to hear that he is recuperating well from any injuries he would have suffered from the fall and that you have been able to calm down as well. A wee note here for Pam as well...it was very upsetting to read of your having been 'victimized' three times by robbery and threats!...I can just imagine how it would take a 'long time' to get over these traumas .... Yes..Pam, my dear...you are certainly one to be much admired for your strength of character and determination to always 'go forward'...Blessings be with you.....
