THE first study to examine the effect of sending emails shows it has psychological and health benefits. University students who wrote emails about traumatic experiences, such as the September 11 attacks, were healthier in the weeks that followed than those who wrote about non-emotional topics, or did not send email. The research, conducted by the psychology department of Texas University, shows that those students who wrote about their feelings and sent the emails reported being sick for significantly fewer days than those who did not, and were less likely to miss class because of an illness. Erin Brown, a psychologist at the university, said that writing, even if it was only by email, helped foster greater self-clarity and stopped a person internalising stress. It boosted health and mood, even among pessimistic individuals, and helped a person cope with the stresses of life. "Sure, email is a fast and convenient form of communication and even a method for proliferating corny jokes and outrageous hoaxes," Ms Brown said. "But results showed that even when administered through email, emotional writing still produced positive health outcomes. People have always known that talking or writing about their problems helps them feel better psychologically. "This study provides empirical evidence that written emotional expression is beneficial to physical health, even when conducted through email." --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Top 50 English/Welsh Names Ever wondered if your ancestors' names were popular in early Victorian Britain 150 years ago? Mark Antony Lever's 'A Dictionary of the Family Names of the United Kingdom' was published by John Russell Smith, London, in 1860. In Lever's book he quotes the number of different surnames existing within England and Wales (i.e. excluding Scotland and Ireland) as in excess of 30,000. He then reproduces statistics from a report of Her Majesty's Registrar-General that depict the 50 most common surnames in England and Wales. The following table is derived from 9 quarterly indexes of births, 8 of deaths and 8 of marriages extracted from the official indexes of 1838, 1851 and 1853. The results were accepted as statistically correct when arranged against different indexes. It should be noted that the 50 names embrace approximately 18 out of every 100 registered and that one in 28 of the whole population in the mid-19th century would answer to the name of Smith Jones or Williams. It is surprising what can develop from a simple action. I fell on my nose this morning. Sounds funny and I had to laugh later but my hand slipped when I was helping myself on hands and knees on the stairs, and I landed - yes, you guessed it - on my nose. After losing about ten gallons of blood I recovered my composure and screamed for help - which was not forthcoming. Isn't it amazing that when people want help, their message arrives much quicker to you than yours to them. Must be atmospherics. <SARCASM> My address book now has many more names blocked. I hope you all remember tomorrow is St Georges Day. I knew you would - God bless you - but how many knew St George was/is also the Patron Saint of Palestine? I hope he can help them against the present murderous onslaught. I have to think that had Saddam-from-Iraq had done what Sharon has done he would be no more. I know this is not a political list but the world is going mad and you all know, I say what I think. Pity Arafat hasn't got any oil, isn't it? You should see the guy who lives opposite us getting out of his car. Every time I see him, it is a humbling experience to me, far from great amusement. We have lived in this house for 25 years, and he is about 65 now and he's always been badly crippled in the legs - his poor legs are all over the place. We can't remember now if it was an accident or polio, but he's always been the same since we've known him. About a year ago, he was sitting in his greenhouse, potting plants, when he fell backwards and went through the glass. Tried to save himself of course, with his hands, and severed all the arteries and tendons. He managed to call out to his wife, who was working down the garden. Fortunately, his next door neighbour, a young feller, was home from the Police, and went in and administered first aid, while the wife called the ambulance. They said the neighbour had saved his life - he would certainly have bled to death if he had not had the first aid. It took him many months and a lot of physiotherapy to regain the use of his hands. If I saw anyone laugh when he was struggling out of his car, I would kill them myself. Marj > I had just about decided to give up driving.
