Apparently, (I am too young to remember) Although bread wasn't rationed during WW2 it was between 1946 and 48 by Clement 'Fair Shares' Atlee. The measure was ostensibly meant to help starving Germany after they'd spent five years trying to bomb the hell out of us. That's not my style of Socialism. Coupled with the fuel crisis it provoked the headlines Starve with Strachey (John Strachey , Minister of food) and shiver with Shinwell (Manny Shinwell, Minister of fuel) Motor fuel was derationed in 1950 and was available as low octane Pool Petrol until brand names were re- established. I can actually still remember the 'pinking ' bangs. Now that's probably when counselling might have helped because we were all still shell shocked from the being bombed by the poor starving Germans who probably bombed Marged's Chippy. Jim, in days gone by, before the ultra-mobile society we now live in, the "psychologists" of the world were our extended family, Grandfather, great uncle Fred, as well as the elders of the village and church. The wisdom of the older generation what listened to and appreciated... Now we pay people to be our extended family and our village elders... Strange way of doing things, if you ask me! Just another soggy Seattle Sysop. -----Original Message----- From: Jim SHARPE [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2002 3:08 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [GEN-FRIENDS] from today's Telegraph I'm afraid all this psychology lark goes right above my head. MUSLIM MARINE FIGHTS IN NAME OF ISLAM >From Tom Newton Dunn At Bagram Air Base THE only Muslim Royal Marine in Afghanistan vowed last night to fight al-Qaeda terrorists in the name of Islam. Each night as his comrades sit in camp playing cards and talking about the conflict, Ghazanfar Hussain, 22, reads the Koran. He doesn't drink or smoke, and the Brit-born commando of Pakistani origin tries to pray as often as possible - whenever he gets a chance to clean his feet. But he insists that to fight against the Islamic extremist organisation and kill their followers does not clash with his beliefs. Ghaza, from Yorkshire, said: "It made me very angry when al-Qaeda used my religion on September 11 to justify what they did. "There is no suicide bombing in the Koran. They are just simple terrorists. Their faith is false. "When we go up there to sort them out, not only will I be doing my job, I'll also be doing right by my religion. They need to be stopped and brought to justice. And that is in the Koran." Ghaza's mother is home in Yorkshire while his father has returned to the Kashmir mountains to look after Ghaza's ageing grandmother. Speaking at Bagram Air Base as he prepared for war, Ghaza added: "The terrorists killed hundreds of Pakistanis on September 11 and hundreds of Muslims, not to mention hundreds of British. I think some people have forgotten that. "The bottom line is that I'm a British citizen, so I fight for Britain." After 18 months' hard training, former Burger King waiter Ghaza is one of the fittest marines in 45 Commando's Whiskey Company. And he says he enjoys the mutual respect of his colleagues. "No matter what your colour, creed or beliefs everyone is treated the same," he says. "We are all brothers." --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
