On my desk from left to right I have a microfilm viewer, my old tower (not connected but there in case of disaster which I feel is always lurking), my monitor, my keyboard backed by a letter rack (full), and sundry plastic envelope files then the current CPU tower. I must bung that underneath alongside my printer. I also have an oil filled radiator there because I feel the cold when they turn the central heating off. Depending on the version of Word you are using, you might be able to recover from something like that by hitting undo or by the auto-save recovery routine. I don't remember how the files are labeled but in the same location as your "saved" documents should be a temporary file that word can use to recover with. If you have the Auto-Save function set to save at fairly short intervals, you always have a safety net.
