The Damilola Taylor thing is just too sad. I don't know, in the first place, how his parents could have sent him to England on his own, and he seems to have been living in a bad neighbourhood. The police have messed this up by having that girl as a witness and encouraging her to go for financial reward, so that she was prepared to say ANYTHING to get the money. Now, as is often the case, it has been revealed that the two brothers who have been found not guilty have long and terrible criminal records. > > > TIN OF SPAGHETTI COSTS TAXPAYERS £10,000 > By Jeremy Armstrong > --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Your desk *is* very tidy I must be a slob. Dorothy's right. Is that a scanner by your monitor Marg. On my desk from left to right I have a microfilm viewer, my old tower (not connected but there in case of disaster which I feel is always lurking), my monitor, my keyboard backed by a letter rack (full), and sundry plastic envelope files then the current CPU tower. I must bung that underneath alongside my printer. I also have an oil filled radiator there because I feel the cold when they turn the central heating off. No, it's not MY desk, Jim, it's BRIAN'S! Have another look at the note accompanying today's photograph I always have to explain that I have the e-mailing program that is acceptable to Rootsweb, and that's why I send everyone's photographs. My desk is very untidy at the moment, but it is the best desk I have ever seen, in Teak, manufactured by my husband! Marj > Your desk *is* very tidy I must be a slob. Dorothy's right. There's also the Damilola case. Jim Sharpe Shaw, Oldham. -----Original Message----- From: mikemail [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, April 26, 2002 2:02 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [GEN-FRIENDS] British Justice TIN OF SPAGHETTI COSTS TAXPAYERS £10,000 By Jeremy Armstrong A TIN of spaghetti cost the taxpayer £10,000 yesterday because a thief insisted on trial by jury. Stephen Phillips, denied stealing the 92p can despite 30 previous convictions for shoplifting. He claimed to have slipped the tin into his pocket and "forgotten about it" after deciding to buy bread. A jury at Newcastle Crown Court took 32 minutes to convict the 23-year-old of stealing the can from a Co-op store in South Shields. But the hearing, involving 24 people, cost £8,000. Bringing Phillips, of Sunderland, back for sentence will add £2,000. Magistrates could have dealt with it at a fraction of the cost. The thief defended his decision to go to the Crown Court. He said: "It is every person's right to have a trial by jury and I wanted it to be heard in the big court." Last night local Labour MP Ronnie Campbell demand a law change to stop such cases. He said: "This is stupid justice, not proper justice." --- --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Depending on the version of Word you are using, you might be able to recover from something like that by hitting undo or by the auto-save recovery routine. I don't remember how the files are labeled but in the same location as your "saved" documents should be a temporary file that word can use to recover with. If you have the Auto-Save function set to save at fairly short intervals, you always have a safety net. Just another soggy Seattle Sysop. -----Original Message----- From: mikemail [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, April 26, 2002 11:29 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [GEN-FRIENDS] LABELS From hard experience we must learn to 'save' ----- Original Message ----- From: Marged To: [email protected] Sent: Friday, April 26, 2002 7:43 PM Subject: [GEN-FRIENDS] LABELS I just spent quite a long time typing up my labels for my holiday postcards, and just at the press of a button, they all disappeared and all that was left was the original Word Document with nothing on it.
