    3. I wanted to learn to type as it was a useful skill for summer jobs. At my high school I had to choose between typing and French. I have always felt strongly that a knowledge of French is essential in Canada as it is one of our official languages so i have never really learned. ( I sent the children to French Immersion for this reason. They are very happy I did) When my mother sold real estate she spent a lot of time typing up Offers for the other sales people once they discovered how well she could type. I always felt they took advantage of her good nature Jean I actually told our girls NOT to learn to type under any circumstances as I had noticed that once men in an office found out you could type, you got no further than being a secretary. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 3. Mum really wanted to take nurses training instead but Grandma felt Mum was not suited to nursing. Finally in 1939 Mum started training as a nurse but when WW2 started they stopped training nurses and Mum ended up working as a secretary at Metropolitan Vickers, Trafford park, Manchester. Grandma also worked there as the Nurse in Charge of the Girls' ambulance Room from 1939 to 1943. I have the copy of the poem The White Cliffs by Alice Duer Miller that Grandma received as a farewell present. It is signed by her fellow workers. 3. I suppose my statistics were based on the conditions in Sutton Coldfield. The only grammar school was on the other side of Birmingham and required a very long bus trip. Mum had all the possibilities well researched by the time I was 7. I have always felt it was very ironic that had we stayed in the UK the state would have paid for my university expenses. In Canada I had to finance it by a combination of summer jobs, bursaries and loans. In Southport in 1970, a child needed an IQ of 123 to pass the 11+, because there were only two grammar schools to accommodate them. In Liverpool at the same time a child needed an IQ of 108, because there were lots of grammar schools. Nowadays, the top pupils in Liverpool are creamed off at 11 to schools like St Hilda's (where my sister and I went, but it's different now because it is selective) and the Bluecoat School. There are a couple of good private schools in our part of Sefton, like Merchant Taylors, but in the main pupils go to secondary schools until 16 and then move on to the Sixth Form College, unless they are Catholics when they have the choice of going to the catholic Comprehensive school (where mine went) until they are 18. 3. I understand why spelling is not corrected in the creative writing as teachers want to the children to think about what they write rather than not use a word because the child can not spell it. Thus a 6 year old will use a word like aquarium nowadays when in the past the emphasis on correct spelling would have led to avoidance of the word. My children learned by this method and both spell well now. However by the age of 8 they also had spelling words to learn. It takes a lot longer to learn to spell this way but they write very well. They did not spell well until they went to university and that seems to due to the professors demanding the use of spell checkers. Now at a good secondary school I am informed that because the exam boards only award 3 marks for spelling as long as the meaning is clear any spelling mistakes are ignored in exams & therefore spelling is not given a high priority in class. I note that most errors are still corrected in my daughter's books though. Standards have most definitely slipped over the years. Sue S It is no longer necessary to be reasonably proficient at English composition. From perusing my granddaughter's exercise books it seems that corrections are no longer made. 3. There is lots of evidence to show that comprehensive schools work better for the majority of children and gives them the most opportunity for advancement. The north American high school is similar to a comprehensive. Still theere are complaints by minorities that they are often shifted into course that are not acceptable for university entrance. My mother took a secretarial course after she left school and her training stood her in good stead for the rest of her life. Still she had always wanted to go to university and was prevented by lack of money. She had to leave school at 15 as Grandma was a widow. While Grandma supported them working as a State Registered nurse she could not finance an extended education. Expectations for girls were very different in 1936. We went to what was then called a "Central" School, where we learnt shorthand and typing. Probably the best education for us. When I was a school secretary, and they still had the 11+ in Southport, I used to go to the Education Offices at night to mark papers for the 11+, and I realised how DAFT it was, as you had to give the exact answer that was on the paper, and any use of imagination got marked WRONG! No going off at a tangent. So I drew my own kids out of the system and sent them to the only Comprehensive School in town, where I was by then working myself. Comprehensive education is wonderful - I know so many people who would have failed the 11+ who have good degrees and excellent careers. Looking at these questions reminds me of how I felt in maths lessons - my mind just switches itself off. I also understand it is possible to watch TV in a small "window" on the monitor whilst working on a PC programme. On our street in Sutton Coldfield children who failed the 11+ and whose parents wanted them to go to university went to private schools where they could get the university prep courses unavailable at the Secondary Modern schools. This system was a main motivation for my parents immigrating to Canada. It worked as I am the first university graduate in my family and my brother the second. 3. Nice to have you back Jean, we might get some sense now :-)) Glad your neck is recovering. Brian Staffordshire, UK List Admin www.lordbramhall.co.uk ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jean White" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, April 26, 2002 9:00 PM Subject: [GEN-FRIENDS] I am back | Hi, | | It was too strange not having any email so I am back. My neck is getting | better. | | A lot seems to have happened. Marged has red hair. You look very nice there, | Marged, and she is going to Cyprus. I shall be watching the international | news closely next week. | | What is the Damilola case? | | Our news is full of the 4 Canadian soldiers, on a night training exercise | in Afghanistan, who were killed by American friendly fire. Two were from | Halifax. The last of the four was buried yesterday. They are the only | Canadian fatalities so far. | | Brian's desk looks very practical. | | Today we had snow followed by very cold rain. My poor daffodils are lying on | the ground. I am glad I decided to wait until mid May to uncover my | miniature rose bushes. The Magnolia across the street is almost out but it | may wait another few days now. | | On Sunday I am going to see Stars on Ice starring Kristi Yamaguchi, Lucinda | Ruh ( the world's best spinner) and Brian Orser. He is 40 and planning to | retire soon so this may be my last chance to see him skate. Kristi is | planning to retire too. | | Jean | | | --- | Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. | Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). | Version: 6.0.351 / Virus Database: 197 - Release Date: 4/19/02 | | | ==== GEN-FRIENDS Mailing List ==== | If you are unsubscribed from the list unintentionally, | simply resubscribe.
