In recognition of the 1852 establishment of Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, Ms Shatto will be sharing ways people expressed their sorrow in times past. Other topics include the view of death, mourning fashions and fabrics, etiquette, funeral practices and the funeral industry. Sue is the owner of the Victorian Millinery in Frederick - making and dealing in vintage hats, period clothes, lecturing to other organizations and teaching related topics at Frederick Community College. Mourning could be viewed as the social diffusion of grief through sympathy; but as a practice, can help bind families and communities. As a part of family history, understanding the treatment of death over 100 years ago can lead to greater understanding of our ancestors. Strict codes of behavior were a part of the Victorian life which was ruled by strict adherence to seemingly endless books on self-improvement and etiquette. Sue will explain the practices and talk about the literature concerning mourning rules and customs. The lecture will be part of the regular monthly meeting of the genealogical society, and is open to the public at no charge and no reservations are required.
