    1. [GEN-EVENTS-L] Black Eden : the Idlewild Community (Michigan)
    2. We wanted to let you know about a program that we are very proud of. We are in hope that this helps to educate people about Idlewild and its unique part of Michigan's history. Idlewild, Michigan in Lake County has a rich and colorful past. As a resort for black Americans during segregation, the small town became the playground for the elite of the black community. Over the years, it hosted talents such as Louis Armstrong, B. B. King, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Wilson, Aretha Franklin, and Della Reese. Recently, Benjamin C. Wilson and Lewis Walker, two professors at Western Michigan University, have written a history of Idlewild, explaining its role in black identity and culture within the context of segregation. The book is called Black Eden: the Idlewild Community and was published in 2002 by Michigan State University Press. The book also includes some of the town's current revitalization efforts, a result of its decline as a resort community. Mr. Wilson and Mr. Walker will present a program based on their book at the Fremont Area District Library on February 20, 2003. The program will begin at 7:30 in the community room of the Fremont Area District Library. Sandy Vincent Local History Room Fremont Area District Library Fremont, Michigan 49412 231-928-0253
