Discover Your Family History Workshop Saturday, Jan. 25, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Start off the New Year learning the basics of finding the fascinating history of your family. Discover where to start, no matter where your ancestors came from. Steps are outlined for finding information within your own family and in libraries, archives, courthouses, churches, and cemeteries. Many examples of records and repositories all over the United States demonstrate research paths that can eventually point you to the "old country." Extensive handouts include useful Internet addresses. Designed for anyone starting their research and as a refresher for those with some research experience. Nonmembers: $16; $12 for MHS members. Writing Your Family History in Small, Manageable Pieces Saturday, Jan. 25, 1:30 to 3 p.m. Writing your family history is not as daunting a task as many seem to think. Most of us don't think of ourselves as writers, and accumulate family history without putting much into print. Don't wait until your research is "completed" to share and preserve your research results and family stories. This class offers anyone encouragement, methods, examples, practical "write-as-you-go" methods, and many simple alternatives to writing a large book all at once. This class will help you record the family history information that was shared over the holidays. It's useful for any researcher, beginner to experienced. Nonmembers $9; $7 for MHS members. Railroad Records and Railroad History: Methods for Tracking Sunday, Jan. 26, 1 to 2:30 p.m. How many genealogists have heard the story that great grandpa (and some females, too!) traversed this nation as he worked for the railroad? What railroad did he work for? If you know which railroad, did it actually operate where he was living? Where are the records today and what do they contain? This lecture, with accompanying extensive visuals and an information-filled handout demonstrate the wealth of historical materials available for researching the railroads and the workers and their records all across the U.S. The records for your ancestor may include personnel records, accident reports, legal cases, land sales, immigration material, advertising, architectural drawings and photographs, biographical material and much more. The handout contains many Web sites for online railroad information and repositories of railroad material. Nonmembers $9; $7 for MHS members. NEW CLASS! Solve Genealogical Problems Like a Pro Sunday, Jan. 26, 3 to 4:30 p.m. Hear and see working examples of the tools, techniques, and methodology professional researchers use to solve all kinds of genealogical problems. This class uses real research problems and situations to help you learn to evaluate evidence, think through problems, search for appropriate resources, and move your own research forward. This is a hands-on workshop, so come prepared to learn by being involved! Several real research problems will be presented, to be discussed and analyzed by the instructors and the class. Class registrants are welcome to e-mail the instructors a one-page discussion of a genealogical problem; some of those will be used as a basis for the handouts, examples, and discussions in the session. Note: This is not a beginner-level session but can be valuable for almost anyone with some research experience. Nonmembers $9; $7 for MHS members.
