This volume, covering the years 1902 to 1913, is available to Le Comité members at $27.50 and $37.50 to non-members. The society will hold a Used Book Fair Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13, 2003, at the Louisiana State Archives in Baton Rouge. A large number of used books and periodicals, both genealogical and non-genealogical, will be offered for sale at very low prices. Proceeds will go toward purchasing new books for the Archives Research Room. The hours on Saturday will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The society will hold its Annual Meeting on Sunday, September 14, 2003, at the Louisiana State Archives, 3851 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, from 1:00 to 5:00. Speakers will be announced at a later date. NEWS FROM THE LOUISIANA STATE ARCHIVES IMPORTANT NOTE: The Research Room of the Louisiana State Archives will be closed beginning Friday, February 21st, through Sunday, March 9th, for carpet replacement and renovations. The Research Room will reopen Monday, March 10th, at 8 a.m. Volunteers are needed for several projects including the New Orleans Ship Passenger List Index for 1851 and 1852 and cataloging of the Nilson Map Collection. Anyone interested in assisting in the Ship Passenger List project is asked to contact Jane Aprill at [email protected] Anyone interested in assisting with the Nilson Map Collection is asked to contact Judy Riffel at [email protected] OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS Silent Histories, Crumbling Memories: The Forgotten Cemeteries of Imperial St. Landry Parish is a new exhibit at the Opelousas Museum and Interpretive Center that will run through August 31, 2003. This exhibit will tell the story of family cemeteries throughout Imperial St. Landry Parish, a parish that when it was divided became eight parishes - St. Landry (parish seat), Evangeline (1911), Acadia (1886), Imperial Calcasieu (1840), Beauregard (1911), Allen (1911), and Jefferson Davis (1912). It consists of 36 photographic images taken by Freddie Herpin, a local award winning photographer, and features mourning customs, meaning of symbolism on the grave markers, and ways to "date" burials. Cemetery tours will be offered in the Spring and Fall of 2003. The Museum is located at 315 N. Main St. in Opelousas and is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. No admission is charged, but donations are accepted. For more information, contact Sue Deville at [email protected] The Louisiana Genealogical & Historical Society will mark its 50th Anniversary and the 200th Anniversary of the Louisiana Bicentennial by holding a two-day annual meeting on Friday and Saturday, April 25-26, 2003, at the Holiday Inn South in Baton Rouge. Friday's lectures on Louisiana's precolonial and colonial history include: Richard Condrey on Louisiana's Native Americans; Robert de Berardinis on French Colonial Louisiana; Lee Woodward on Spanish Colonial Louisiana; Gregory Osborn and James Eberwine on Louisiana's African-Americans; and Claire Mire Bettag on Louisiana Repositories and Records. Elizabeth Shown Mills will speak on Saturday on the following topics: Ten Steps to a Solution: How to Analyze a Problem and Develop a Research Strategy; Genealogy in a Heinz 57 World: Old Myths, Modern Methods; The Identity Crisis: Right Name, Wrong Man? Wrong Name, Right Man?; and Finding Females: Wives, Mothers, Daughters, Sisters and Paramours!. The conference fee is $30 for Frid! ay, $30 for Saturday, and $30 for the banquet.
