Laura, You are absolutely correct that your email addy can be obtained by spammers. If you allow html email, which you shouldn't, turn off "display images and embedded objects in HTML email". The reason for this, according to Apple computer, is that when the html email opens it has links embedded to go back to the spammer to get the images & objects contained within the email. The email is not sent, initially with the images & objects because the spammer doesn't know if the addy is valid and they won't waste bandwidth for obsolete email addy's. In order to send the images back to you they need your email addy. Since you allowed the html email to open, and the request for the images & objects was sent, the spammer now knows your email addy is valid because the request contains your email addy. Gotcha! This tip will not eliminate spam immediately, but over time will probably reduce the volume. The best solution, for Mac users, is Apple's application "MAIL". The spam filter within Mail is fantastic and the accuracy is phenomenal. The emails Mail determines are spam, and those I have taught it are spam, are directed to a SPAM folder. I check it once in awhile and then delete the spam. Sorry for the length, but everyone needs to know that html email is the devil's work. It may be prettier than plain text, but it is a virus worse than any other. If your email client doesn't allow you to turn off html email, then get another client.
