Green County Genealogical Society PR for May Topic: The XVII Suggestions for Genealogists Jack Brisee, Wisconsin State Genealogical Society President, will be the speaker when the Green County Genealogical Society meets for its Second Annual Meeting at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday 3 May 2003 at the Monroe Public Library, 925 16th Ave., Monroe. Lot’s of people are willing to offer their version of the Ten Commandments these days, but since most people are only going to follow those they want to follow anyway, this talk offers XVII (Seventeen) “Suggestions” for how to do better genealogy. The speaker says you will not be condemned to “that place” if you don’t follow them, but angels will undoubtedly sing praises for your good works if you do. The XVII Suggestions can help the beginning genealogist to get off on the right foot, and the more accomplished genealogist to get back on the right path. Brissee also says that he developed most of these suggestions from having taken a few wrong turns, and that it is okay to come and laugh at his mistakes. Jack Brissee is President of the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society. He has been active in support of the National Genealogical Society and the Federation of Genealogical Societies, having been awarded both the George E Williams Award for outstanding contributions to genealogical organizations in a single year, and the David S Vogels, Jr Award for outstanding career contributions to genealogy. He has represented the Wisconsin genealogical community on the special committee to make recommendations to the legislature on an online vital records registrations system, the task group to define direct and tangible interest in vital records, and the Wisconsin Historical Society Library and Archives Study Committee. His personal genealogical interests are in colonial New York State, Germany and Wisconsin. He is a resident of the Town of Oregon in Dane County. The meeting is open to the public and there is no charge. Refreshments will be available. Interested people, new to family history and genealogy, are most welcome. Members will be available to try and answer questions. For further information, please contact John Dundee at 608-897-4776 or Donna Kjendlie at [email protected] GCGS publication efforts continue with their book, “The Greenwood Cemetery of Monroe, Wisconsin.” Members of the Society, newly organized in 2001, walked the cemetery, copying stones diligently, word for word, and then comparing them to records at the cemetery office. Sometimes an obituary was used to provide pertinent information or corroboration. There were no written records prior to 1921, making the work doubly difficult for everyone. The Greenwood Cemetery publication is available in a softbound copy for $35 plus $4 s/h and also by CD, which is fully searchable for $25 plus $2 s/h. 5.5% WI Sales tax if applicable. Orders may be sent to GCGS, PO Box 313, Monroe, WI 53566-0313.
