Session I –9:30 am Slave Ancestry Research: The Slavery Era Insurance Registry The Slavery Era Insurance Registry which came into existence in 2000, represents the largest single resource known of information pertaining to insurance policies issued on slaves, and contains slave/slaveholder data from 11 southern states. Session II—10:45 am Using African American Newspapers Tips and strategies to using African American newspapers, including their use in solving research problems; also show how they provide unprecedented insight into the social activities of black communities, both urban and rural. Session III—1:00 pm Developing the Genealogy of an African American Community: A Case Study Constructing the genealogy of a community by collecting and analyzing information of African Americans in a specific community. **************************************************************************************************** Beginner’s Track Presenter: Dr. Deborah Abbott Session I -9:30 am Research Tools and Organization Learn the tools needed to tracing your ancestors. Learn how to organize those little pieces of paper holding your family history. Learn to fill the gaps in your ancestor research by locating such records as birth, death, marriage, divorce, tax, estate, wills, etc Session II—10:45 am Analyze Census Records Learn how to locate and analyze federal population schedules, non-population schedules and other vital records. These records will reveal snapshots of your ancestors’ lives that you may have never known existed. Session III—1:00 pm Locate Tax, Wills & Estate Records Learn the different ways to fill the gaps in your ancestor research by locating such records as divorce, tax, estate, wills,.
