FREE ANCESTOR FAIR COMING TO OK HISTORY CENTER Oklahoma Genealogical Society and the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS) Research Division are sponsoring a second Ancestor Fair at the Oklahoma History Center, 2401 N. Laird Ave., Oklahoma City, OK (across 23rd street from the Governor's mansion). The event is free and the public is invited. Some of the events require a little planning, so prepare your entry for the Genealogy Contest, find those great old family photos, locate a costume for the parade, or prepare a five-minute story for the Open Mic - or just come to watch and have fun. Festivities begin at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 9, 2008, and will continue throughout the day until 4:00 PM. There will be musicians, storytellers - both professional and amateur, artists, musicians, and costumes. A special children's area filled with fun projects will keep young hands busy. There will be representatives from several lineage societies, genealogical and historical groups with handouts and displays to share their interests, historical maps and books to purchase, many interesting costumes to see, photo displays to examine, and great people to meet. Come dressed for the costume parade if you wish. Join the fun by entering contests featuring old photographs and genealogy research. Genealogy Research Contest will be judged in the following categories: 1) Five Generation Study (all ancestors of one individual through their great, great grandparents) 2)Photograph Genealogy (at least 4 generations) 3) Family Line Traced to an Immigrant 4) My Oklahoma Pioneer (story) 5) My Favorite Ancestor (story) 6) A Soldier's Story (any time period or war) 7)Open Class; and these entries are due by Monday August 4. They may be brought to the OGS general meeting that night, or delivered to the OHS research library prior to August 4. Please attach to your entry your name, address, phone and/or email and category that you are entering - but no family heirlooms please. Please include postage for returning your entry or plan to reclaim it in person on August 9. The same instructions apply to the Old Photo contest, but the deadline for photo entries is 11 am on August 9, the day of the event. Photos will not be returned, so please submit good copies (no originals) and decide between the following eleven categories: 1) Hats 2) Hair 3) Babies 4) Soldiers 5) Children 6) Costumes 7) Weddings 8) Open Class 9) Family Reunions 10) Unusual Settings 11) Scariest Ancestor. Most importantly--invite your friends and neighbors and load up the kids and grandchildren and bring them for a fun day celebrating their heritage.
