The German Genealogy Group will hold its next monthly meeting on Thursday, May 1st at 7:30 at the: Hicksville VFW Hall—Post 3211 320 South Broadway (Route 107) Hicksville, New York 11801 We welcome all who are interested in researching their Germanic origins. There is no fee for guests and all are welcome. The program this month will feature “Civil War Genealogical Research in New York” with presenter Laura H. Congleton and “History of the DUVCW” with presenter Janice Guy. Ms. Congleton is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, the current NY Department President of the DUVCW, and a 2005 recipient of NY State Archives’ Larry J. Hackman Research Residency Award for a book she is compiling on all Union Veterans who served from Owego in Tioga county NY. Her talk will help us learn how to research Civil War ancestors using publicly available records online and at NY repositories. Ms. Guy is descended from the Pearsall and Post families who settled on Long Island in the 1600’s, is a Past NY Department President of the DUVCW, has been active in the DUVCW since January 2001 and has attended all Department and National Encampments since joining. She is also in the Cambridge Who’s Who New York 2006/2007 edition. Her talk will focus on the history of the DUVCW. An Orientation session for beginners and newcomers will be held at 7 PM and the regular meeting will start at 7:30. GGG members and guests will have access to the building beginning at 6:30 PM.
