    3. On Tuesday, March 18, 2008 the Mount Vernon Genealogical Society (MVGS) will meet in room 112 of the Hollin Hall Senior Center in Alexandria, Virginia. The meeting will start at 1:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The meeting will feature a presentation entitled "National Environment and Your Family." The program will be presented by Constance Potter and Kenneth Heger. Constance Potter, an archivist at the National Archives in Washington, DC, specializes in federal records of genealogical interest. She has lectured at FGS, NGS, NIGR., and NARA’s genealogical workshops. She is a contributing editor to “Genealogy Notes” in Prologue. Kenneth W. Heger (Ph.D.) is the manager of the Family and Community History program at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. He speaks regularly at national genealogy conferences and has published articles on family history. Dr. Heger received his MA and Ph.D. in history from the University of Maryland. The speakers will discuss how weather affected our families amid drought, depression and other features of the weather both within the US and in Europe. Kenneth Heger and Constance Potter explain how weather can influence your family's history. Using the records of the Department of State, the Signal Corps, the General Land Office, and the Weather Bureau they describe just some of the records that can be used when researching the weather and the environment. The Hollin Hall Senior Center is located 4 miles south of Alexandria just off Fort Hunt Road at 1500 Shenandoah Road in Alexandria, Virginia. MVGS is a nonprofit organization and has over 260 members residing in Alexandria, Fort Belvoir, the counties of Fairfax, Prince William, Montgomery, and Prince Georges, as well as several states.
