    1. [GEN-EVENTS] British Isles Family History Society–USA meeting
    2. British Isles Family History Society–USA meeting Join us for our February meeting on 22 February 2009, 1:00-3:00, when Jean Wilcox Hibben presents, "Appalachian Ancestors: Their Lives, Legends, and Lyrics." Whether or not you have Appalachian ancestry, you will learn useful information about the American past. While entertaining audiences with ghost tales and historic stories, Jean will also introduce people to the music of the culture. The Appalachian area of the United States is rich in tradition and is where many old songs and ballads from the British Isles were brought over and developed into well-known American folksongs. Jean will play a variety of folk instruments to provide audience members with a sense of the "music of the hills." Music and stories were not only the entertainment of our ancestors, but also the means to teach lessons. From these stories and songs, children learned about some of the dangers waiting around the bend. Our presenter, Jean Wilcox Hibben, is a Board-Certified Genealogist and has been involved in family research for over 30 years. She is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), the National Genealogical Society (NGS), and the Corona Genealogical Society, where she serves as President. She is also the Membership and Meeting Coordinator for the Riverside Folk Song Society. Jean has a doctorate in folklore and is a volunteer at the Corona California Family History Center where she trains Family History consultants. A native of the Chicago suburbs, she moved to Southern California in 1973. She has both a bachelors and masters degrees in Speech Communication. Jean is now a national speaker in both areas and is known for her entertaining, as well as informative, presentations. Our meetings are held at: Los Angeles Regional Family History Center, 10741 Santa Monica Blvd. (enter from Eastborne at Manning) Los Angeles, CA 90025 Parking is free.
