All The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 25 June 2007 at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15 pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall, exchange journals and the library. After a brief AGM at 8.00pm, the subject of the talk is "The Story of the Changing Faces Books". I am sure that everyone with Oxfordshire and North Berkshire interests will have at one time or another consulted a "Changing Faces" title to learn more about the towns and villages in which their ancestors lived. Each "Changing Faces" title focuses on a particular Oxfordshire town, village or area, and comprises a brief background history, followed by lots and lots of old photographs with captions. This seems to be a very successful formula, which is particularly popular with family historians. Further details about these splendid books is available at :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/books.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/books.html) Our speaker on "The Changing Faces" series will be the society's secretary, Julie Kennedy. In addition to having run OFHS for umpteen years, Julie has also compiled several "Changing Faces" titles, and in her presentation will be considering some of the Oxfordshire characters that she has met whilst on "Changing Faces" duty. She will be assisted in this by the series' publisher Bob Boyd, himself a very long-standing OFHS member. This has the potential to be a hugely interesting and emotional evening in this, the society's thirtieth year. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions as to how to get to the Exeter Hall, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html) For a list of future OFHS meetings, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html) Any queries, please contact me off-list. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, June 9, 2007 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Don Raney Program: "How To Find Your Revolutionary War Ancestor" It is estimated that over 250,000 men fought in the American Revolution, also known as the American War of Independence. About one out of every five males in the colonies served and many thousands more filed claims for services and materials provided to the colonies. Therefore, anyone who had ancestors living in the colonies in 1776 had a high probability of being a descendant of one or more patriots or Revolutionary War veterans. Don Raney's lecture will describe how you can use a number of sources such as; Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, HeritageQuest Online images of the Revolutionary War pension files, Pierce's Register, Rider Index, DAR Patriot Index, DAR Genealogical Records Committee National Index, and the SAR Patriot Index. In addition, he will provide information about nineteen Internet sites as additional sources for information on your Revolutionary War ancestor. If your ancestor is found in one of these sources, additional information can be obtained from the National Archives microfilm collection and state archives records on veterans of the state militia. Donald Raney, a sixth-generation Texan, has been an active genealogist for over 25 years, and a frequent speaker at ETGS and all over Texas. On the national level, he has presented sessions at GENTECH, the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and the Genealogical Institute of Texas. He is a life member of the San Jacinto Descendants and past director of GENTECH and the Dallas Genealogical Society's Computer Interest Group. Mr. Raney will be a speaker at the upcoming Angelina College Conference in Lufkin. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Beverly Bailey Odom and Larry Oliver will conduct a round table discussion on any computer related topic. Bring your questions. Information on upcoming programs can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~txetgs/meetings.html ETGS will be the local host this year for the Texas State Genealogical Society's annual conference on November 9 and 10, 2007.
