    1. [GEN-EVENTS] September 16, 2007 JGSNY meeting - "Four Lives of Gregory Meisler: Jew, Warrior and Polish Patriot"
    2. Gloria Berkenstat Freund
    3. The Jewish Genealogical Society will present "Four Lives of Gregory Meisler: Jew, Warrior and Polish Patriot" on Sunday, September 16, 2007, at 2:00 PM. The guest speaker is Valery Bazarov, director of the HIAS Location and Family History Service. The program will be held at the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street, Manhattan (between Fifth and Sixth Avenues). Subway: 4, 5, 6, L, N, R to Union Square; F, V, L to 14th Street & Sixth Avenue; 1, 2, 3 to 14th Street & Seventh Avenue. There is a $5 admission charge. This biography of a Polish officer, reconstructed from scratch, highlights a relatively unknown page of Jewish life in Poland between the two wars, as well as the treatment of Jewish prisoners of war in Nazi camps. Enlisted in the Polish armed forces a year before Polish independence, Gregory Meisler learned how to be a Jew and an officer in the anti-Semitic Army. He later spent six years as a POW in Stalag VII at Murnau, Germany. The illustrated, case-study will demonstrate how to find important information on the Internet and use such well-known resources as the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC and the archives of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, along with such lesser-known sources as the Ministry of Defense in Great Britain. Valery Bazarov joined the staff of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) in 1988, where he now directs the HIAS Location and Family History Service. In the 1990s he assisted with the arrival of more than 200,000 Jewish refugees who came from the former Soviet Union to the U.S. under HIAS auspices. Today he helps immigrants of different generations to find family members and friends - often in other countries - with whom they lost contact over the years. The Jewish Genealogical Society hosts monthly programs held at the Center for Jewish History. Members of the public are invited to attend these events and to join the organization, which was founded in 1977. For further information call 212-294-8326 or visit www.jgsny.org. 1. [GEN-EVENTS] Genealogy Meeting in Alexandria, VA on Tuesday, August 21st
    2. Harold McClendon
    3. Dear Genealogist: The next meeting of the Mount Vernon Genealogical Society in Alexandria, Virginia will be on Tuesday, August 21st, at 1:00 p.m. We will meet in our usual location at the Hollin Hall Senior Center, 1500 Shenandoah Road, Alexandria, Virginia. The program will be on immigration and naturalization. The title of the talk is "The Universe of U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Records" and will be presented by Marian L. Smith. I believe this will be one of those meetings that you will enjoy attending. First of all Marian is an excellent speaker. I recently heard her speak to the National Institute on Genealogical Research Alumni Association on the people who created "Morton Allan Directory of European Passenger Steamship Arrivals." She took a topic that could easily be rather dull and turned it into an interesting and informative talk. Also, Claire Kluskens has provided us with handout material for researching immigration and naturalization records at the National Archives. This talk will provide a broad overview of all surviving immigration and naturalization records of the United States, today housed at or available from local courthouses, state archives, the National Archives, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and the internet. Also discussed will be the history of how these records were and are used by genealogical researchers, and how changes in population, access policy, and technology have affected that use. Afterward, there will be plenty of time for questions and answers. Marian L. Smith is the Senior Historian at US Citizenship and Immigration Services, Department of Homeland Security (formerly the Immigration and Naturalization Service). She regularly lectures at national and international genealogy conferences on the history and uses of immigration and naturalization records. Her articles appear in the National Archives journal Prologue, the FGS Forum, and other publications. Her research focus primarily involves official immigration agency records held in the National Archives in downtown Washington, D.C. If you have friends who has indicated an interest in genealogy, I would encourage you to invite them to attend this meeting. I believe they will enjoy the program and might be encouraged to take the next step in researching their family. In order to assure that you get the most out of this topic, I encourage you to make a visit to the MVGS Research Center located in the Hollin Hall Senior Center. The Research Center is open from 10-2 on every Tuesday and Thursday. On the Tuesday of our meeting, the Research Center will be open from 10-12 and after the meeting. Listed below are just some of the books on immigration and naturalization that you will find in the MVGS Research Center: American Naturalization Records (CS65.5 .N38 N49) Ancestry's Red Book (CS47 .A53) American Passenger Arrival Records (CS65.5 .P37 T473) Beginner's Guide To Family History Research (CS16 .A45) The Complete Book of Emigrants (CS431 .E46 C65) Early New York Naturalizations (F123.3 .S36) Finding Your Roots (CS16 .W47) The Genealogist's Companion & Sourcebook (CS16 .C763) Guide to Naturalization Records of the United States (CS65.5 .N38 S33) Guide to Genealogical Research at the National Archives (CS67 .N383 G854) Handbooks for Foreign Genealogical Research (CS67 .L133 W66) The How Book For Genealogists (CS16 .S87) Immigrant and Passenger Arrivals (CS65.5 .P37 I46) Locating Your Immigrant Ancestor (CS65.5 .N38 N43) Migration, Emigration, Immigration (CS65.5 .E46 M55) The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy (CS47 .G74) Searching for Your Ancestors (CS16 .D63) The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy (CS47 .S68) They Came in Ships (CS65.5 .P37 C65) Tracing Immigrant Origins (CS35.5 .E46 F36) Please let me know if you have any questions. If the City of Lufkin happens to close the library earlier on Monday due preparations for an early evacuation of people from the Texas coastal areas due to Hurricane Dean, the meeting will be rescheduled for the fourth Monday instead. That new date would be on Monday, August 27, 2007, at the same time and place if one of the library meeting rooms is available. I have been watching the weather news concerning Hurricane Dean. It was upgraded to a category 4 earlier tonight and its land fall is uncertain as to time and place. One estimated arrival time and place was somewhere along the Mexico-Texas coast sometime Wednesday after it cut across parts of Mexico. The society officers for the calendar year 2007 are Vivian Cates-President, Fred Preston-Vice-President, June Moffett-Treasurer, and Anita Crona-secretary. An executive board meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the library prior to the regular society meeting at 5 p.m. All officers and standing committee chairmen are urged to attend. Future society business will be discussed. Items/articles are needed for the Fall ACGS Newsletter. Ellen Pyle is the society newsletter editor. Her phone number and mailing address are listed under Ben M. Pyle in the Lufkin Telephone Directory though she lives near Apple Springs in Trinity County. The fall newsletter will be published via e-mail about October. All items having an Angelina County, Texas, connection or of general interest to genealogy researchers will be considered. Please consider writing a paragraph or two about one or more of your Angelina County, Texas, ancestors for the society newsletter. Contact Ellen or send items by regular mail to the society at Post Office Box 150631, Lufkin, Texas 75915 or leave them at the desk in the Ora McMullen Genealogy Room in the Kurth Memorial Library. Queries about Angelina County people and Angelina County topics are especially requested.
