    1. [GEN-EVENTS] Oxfordshire FHS meeting - Monday 26 November 2007
    2. All The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 26 November 2007 at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15 pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall, exchange journals and the library. The subject of the talk is "Archivist and Family Historians : the best of friends ?". This will be presented by Heather Forbes. I'm told by Heather that after a brief introduction on what Gloucestershire Archives has to offer Oxfordshire family historians, she will explore the theme of how archivists and family history societies can collaborate to provide an improved service for family historians. Heather will be using examples from Hampshire, Kent and Gloucestershire. She is also keen to explore any ideas the audience may have on this subject and to hear good examples of such collaboration from Oxfordshire. Our speaker Heather Forbes has been County and Diocesan Archivist of Gloucestershire since summer 2005. She previously worked for Canterbury Cathedral and Kent Archives Service, Hampshire Record Office and London Metropolitan Archives. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions as to how to get to the Exeter Hall, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html) For a list of future OFHS meetings, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html) Any queries, please contact me off-list. 1. [GEN-EVENTS] Genealogy Meeting in Alexandria, VA on Tuesday, Nov. 20th
    2. Harold McClendon
    3. Dear Genealogist, On Tuesday, November 20, 2007, the Mount Vernon Genealogical Society (MVGS) will meet in room 112 of the Hollin Hall Senior Center in Alexandria, Virginia. The meeting will start at 1:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The meeting will feature a presentation entitled "Buried Births: Finding Birth Information in Federal Records." The program will be presented by Susannah Brooks. Susannah E. Brooks is vice president/membership chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society (MAGS) and a volunteer genealogy staff aide at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, DC. As a researcher she specializes in German, 19th and 20th century general US research, and using bank records in genealogical research. She has lectured on topics related to German and German-American genealogical research, using bank records for genealogical research, and basic genealogical research skills. She has written articles that have appeared in Der Kurier (newsletter of the Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society) and Roots-Key (newsletter of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles). Determining the place of birth is often the key to finding additional information about our ancestor, but most federal records give only the state or foreign country in which a person was born. This presentation, through the use of many examples, will show how one may be able to find the exact place of birth in federal records. Emphasis will be on looking at all the details in each record to find the information or clues we need as researchers. The Hollin Hall Senior Center is located 4 miles south of Alexandria just off Fort Hunt Road at 1500 Shenandoah Road in Alexandria, Virginia. MVGS is a nonprofit organization and has over 260 members residing in Alexandria, Fort Belvoir, the counties of Fairfax, Prince William, Montgomery, and Prince Georges, as well as several states. Additional information about the meeting and MVGS can be found at http://www.MVGenealogy.org/. Any questions about the program should be directed to Harold McClendon at 703-360-0920.

    2. Debbie Parker Wayne
    3. Please feel free to forward this to others who may be interested. We are not going to accept registrations until the conference as that seems the most fair way to allow all TSGS Conference attendees a chance to sign up. But interested persons can use the links to print the forms and come prepared for a consultation. http://lonestarapg.com/roadshow_forms.htm Don't Miss the Genealogy Roadshow Presented by Lone Star Chapter, Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) at the Texas State GS Annual Conference 9-10 November 2007 in Tyler, Texas The Lone Star Chapter of APG is conducting a Genealogy Roadshow at the Texas State Genealogical Society (TSGS) Annual Conference on November 9th and 10th. We are offering free 15-minute consultations during breaks to provide ideas to solve one genealogical problem for conference attendees. To participate in the Genealogy Roadshow please print this linked registration form <http://lonestarapg.com/roadshow_form.pdf>, complete it, and bring it to the conference along with any pertinent documentation. At the conference visit the Lone Star Chapter APG booth to be assigned a consultation time slot. At the time assigned an experienced genealogist will discuss your problem and offer research suggestions that may help further your research. Due to the time limitations it is necessary to focus on a very specific research question. For example: * There were four men with the same name in the same place at the same time. How can I determine which was my ancestor? * I need help determining my great-grandmother's maiden name. The documents I already have are [provide a brief list of sources here with details provided on the document]. * My ancestor served in the Civil War. I have his pension file. What other records might be available to add to his story in this time-frame? * I can trace this family in every census but one. What techniques might I use to find them? Questions are not limited to these topics. These are just examples to show how you might focus on a very specific question. Lone Star Chapter APG members will be available to assist as needed in focusing your question.
