Researchers with ancestors anywhere in Ontario will benefit from Summer Camp, which is sponsored by the Toronto Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. The fee for 2008 is $210 (US dollars at par). This covers approximately 7 hours of lectures and tutorials, 30 hours of supervised research, all worksheets and handouts, and public transportation to venues. 1. [GEN-EVENTS] Steve Morse speaking - NYC Sunday, April 13
    2. Steven W. Siegel
    3. JEWISH GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, INC. Contact: Steven Siegel / 212-415-5544 / swsiegel@pipeline.com “The Jewish Calendar Demystified” and “Searching the New York State Census with Fewer Tears” To be presented at Jewish Genealogical Society meeting on Sunday, April 13, 2008 The Jewish Genealogical Society will present “The Jewish Calendar Demystified” and “Searching the New York State Census with Fewer Tears” on Sunday, April 13, 2008, at 2:00 PM. The guest speaker is Stephen Morse, developer of web-based family history searching aids. The program will be held at the Abraham Joshua Heschel High School, 20 West End Avenue at 60th Street, Manhattan. Subway: A, B, C, D or 1 to Columbus Circle. There is a $5 admission charge for non-members. The Jewish calendar is important to genealogists because Jewish vital records use the Jewish dates. This includes not only birth, marriage, and death certificates, but tombstone inscriptions as well. The Jewish calendar is both a solar and lunar calendar, with the months being synchronized to the moon and years to the sun. As such, the rules governing the calendar can be a bit daunting. This talk presents the calendar in an easy-to-understand – and sometimes tongue-in-cheek – fashion. The aim is not to make you an expert in computing Jewish dates (we have programs that do that) but rather to give you an appreciation for what’s involved in such calculations. Topics covered include the 19-year calendar cycle, the origin of time, errors in the Jewish and secular calendars, and the use of Hebrew letters to represent dates on tombstones. There were several state censuses taken in New York starting from 1790. The most valuable for genealogical purposes are the 1905, 1915, and 1925 censuses because that was a time of large influx of immigration. There were numerous assorted aids for navigating through those censuses, but they were often hard to use, covered only specific years or boroughs, and were not available at all libraries. The One-Step website rectifies that situation by putting a universal finding aid on line that covers all the boroughs of New York City in each of the three census years. This presentation describes the One-Step approach and contrasts it to the previous methods. Stephen Morse is the creator of the One-Step Website for which he has received both the Outstanding Contribution Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies, and the Award of Merit from the National Genealogical Society. He has also received the first ever Excellence Award from the Association of Professional Genealogists. In his other life Morse is a computer professional with a doctorate degree in electrical engineering. He has held various research, development, and teaching positions, authored numerous technical papers, written four textbooks, and holds four patents. He is best known as the architect of the Intel 8086 (the granddaddy of today's Pentium processor), which sparked the PC revolution 25 years ago. The Jewish Genealogical Society hosts monthly programs held at the Center for Jewish History. Members of the public are invited to attend these events and to join the organization, which was founded in 1977. For further information call 212-294-8326 or visit www.jgsny.org. # # #

    2. Michelle Chubenko
    3. -----Original Message----- From: nj-gsnj-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nj-gsnj-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Joan M Lowry Sent: Tuesday, April 01, 2008 1:23 PM To: nj-gsnj@rootsweb.com Subject: [NJ-GSNJ] GSNJ Spring Program Announcement Hi All For those of you who have been wondering "When is GSNJ having our annual spring genealogy program?" We can now provide the answer! The Spring Program will be held April 26 in Avalon NJ. The day will feature nationally renowned speaker Marie V. Melchiori, CG, CGL, who will provide two lectures. Marie's topics will help us all get more out of research in the collections of the National Archives - whether in-person or on-line. A sit-down hot lunch is included in the price. It promises to be a useful and fun event. The event brochure is in the mail to members and subscribers. BUT you can see it even sooner by checking the GSNJ website <www.gsnj.org>. Click on the Events link on the left and then on the "click here" under the Event information. For even easier access try this link: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~njgsnj/pdf/2008SpringProgram.pdf Avalon is in Cape May County (which, for those of us in northern NJ, is pretty far south - wherever you think the north/south Jersey division might be!) There are several bed & breakfast inns, hotels, and motels open for business that weekend and it should be a good time to visit the area. The brochure has links to a couple of Cape May tourism sites to help you find a place to stay and places to play! So - why not plan to stay over and make a weekend of it? I know I am... More details will follow - but if you have questions - about the speaker, the topics, the area, let us know! If you would like a supply of the brochure for your library or society - please contact me off-list and let me know to whom they should be sent and how many! Thanks very much - we hope to see you "down the shore"! Regards, Joan

His missions have taken him to numerous nations throughout Africa, Europe, and Asia. His messages and initiatives are all rooted within the tenets of nonviolent conflict resolution. Committed to the personal, educational and skill development of youth, he has initiated several programs throughout the years to support and nurture young people. Among them were the King Summer Intern Program to provide employment opportunities for high school students; Hoops for Health a charity basketball game intended to increase public awareness of newborn babies who suffer the effects of substance abuse; and A Call to Manhood, an annual event designed to unite young African-American males with positive adult role models. In addition to addressing many youth groups and volunteering for several youth- and young adult-oriented projects, one of Mr. King's writing projects is directed to young people. His current signature youth project is the annual Kindness and Justice Challenge sponsored by Do Something. In 2006, Mr. King began a new organization called Realizing the Dream, in efforts to get back to the core message of his father's dream, and work to end poverty in the U.S. It is a non-profit coalition force that will work across racial lines and hopes to work with governments, businesses, civic leaders and educators to bridge the growing gap between rich and poor. The organization brings together like minded groups in dialogue and cooperative effort, marshalling forces to confront poverty and injustice in America. Mr. King received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Morehouse College, in Atlanta, Georgia, where he majored in Political Science. Martin Luther King, III, was nurtured among individuals deeply committed to the struggle for human rights and a nonviolent society. He has assimilated and utilized those values in his personal and public life. Shamele Jordon <mailto:jordonsh@jersey.net> jordonsh@jersey.net

    1. [GEN-EVENTS] HCGS April 12th Meeting!
    2. Dear Friends, Our April 12th meeting, Unlocking County Genealogical Records, at the historic Brennan Courthouse in Jersey City, will be a very important meeting. Hudson County Clerk Barbara Netchert and Sidney King, of Archives and Record Management, will discuss the current condition of County Records. Surrogate Donald DeLeo will speak on the genealogical value of probate records. At every level of research, these records are "vitally" important. Please make every effort to attend and to show the County representatives just how significant these issues are to us, both as a Genealogical Society and individual researchers. We have been told that parking will be available in front of the courthouse. Also, as with any city location, car-pooling might be a good idea. So please, please, let's have a good attendance for this meeting. Bring friends, family, all who might be interested. As always, more information is available on our website, www.hudsoncountynjgenealogy.org. And coffee will be served! See you there! Ellen Healy Secretary Hudson County Genealogical Society
