The Durham-Orange Genealogical Society of North Carolina Wednesday, 4 February 2009 -- D-OGS Meeting TOPIC: "For No God, but for Country: Understanding the Civil War Enlistment of the North Carolina Grays" SPEAKER: Ernest Dollar, Director of the Preservation Society of Chapel Hill In May 1861, a month after the start of the Civil War, ninety-two young men enlisted to fight for the new Southern Confederacy. Historians of the conflict are eager to understand when men fought, but examining the first motivated volunteers highlights the causes that drew men to war. Comparing the backgrounds and the lives of these men creates a portrait that reveals they were rebelling against more than North and became afraid they would loose all they had fought hard to achieve. Recounting their stories, recreates the world of Orange, Wake, and Chatham Counties as they stood on the brink of war. Ernest Dollar is a Durham native who received his a B.A. in History and B.F.A. in Design from University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1993. Since then he has worked at several historic sites in North and South Carolina including Middleton Place National Historic Landmark, North Carolina Museum of History, and the Orange County Historical Museum. Currently, he serves as the Director of the Preservation Society of Chapel Hill. In 2008, Ernest published his first book as part of the Images of America series on the town of Morrisville and will be teaching a class as part of Duke's OLLI program on the Civil War in the Triangle. Dear Genealogist, The National Archives has scheduled a program with Harvard professor and renowned author Henry Louis Gates, Jr., to discuss African American genealogy. He is the host and narrator of the PBS series African American Lives that uses genealogy, oral history, family stories, and DNA analysis to trace lineage through American history and back to Africa. The first program will be on Thursday, February 5, at 7 p.m. where Professor Allen Weinstein and Dr. Lonnie Bunch will co-moderate the discussion of African American genealogy. After the program, Professor Gates will sign his new book, In Search of Our Roots: How 19 Extraordinary African Americans Reclaimed Their Past. On Friday, February 6, at noon, they will show the first two hours of the series and then on Friday, February 13th, at noon, they will show the final two hours of the series. All of the programs are free and will be presented in the William G. McGowan Theater. It is not necessary to make reservations. Please use the Special Events Entrance on the corner of 7th Street and Constitution Avenue, NW. Doors to the building open 30 minutes prior to the start of the program. Colleagues The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 26 January 2009. It will be held at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15 pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, and the bookstall. The subject of the talk at 8.00pm is "The Wolvercote Paper Mill", which will be presented by Dr Martin Maw. Martin has told me that the talk itself includes some basic history on Oxford University Press [OUP], but concentrates on the growth and development of the paper mill. The latter was not only vital to the Press itself, but was also the centre of the community at Wolvercote for more than 200 years. The presentation will include images from Victorian lantern slides of the mill and the mill houses, as well as more modern shots of the mill and its staff at work. Martin says that he hopes that the talk will give audience members a chance not only to understand paper making, but also to spot some familiar faces from friends or family. Martin will welcome questions and personal reminiscences from anyone whose memories are stirred by the evening, and hopes that we can all have not just a talk, but a conversation. Our speaker Dr Martin Maw has been archivist for OUP for over ten years, having previously worked at the Bodleian and in local government archives. He gave us a tremendously interesting presentation about OUP in Spring 2007 - and effectively this is the second-half of that evening ! Martin has also asked me to mention that he is currently involved in helping with a new four-volume history of OUP from the fifteenth century to the present day, which includes oral history. He is keen that anyone who has worked at OUP or at the Wolvercote Paper Mill and would like to contribute to the project should get in touch with him. Anyone who wants to contribute but is unable to make the meeting should contact me and I'll pass on Martin's details. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions as to how to get to the Exeter Hall, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html) For a list of future OFHS meetings, please see :- _http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html_ (http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html) Any queries, please contact me off-list. These can provide an entertaining, informative and lasting record for your immediate family and future generations about the parts of the world or actual sites where their ancestors resided. You can also include photos and interviews with members of the family or distant relatives. Using photos and video clips from his August 2006 trip to The Irish Republic, Del will demonstrate using a laptop and VGA projector how to assemble an abbreviated DVD documentary. He has used such application programs as Nero, Roxio, Pinnacle Studio Plus, and Adobe Premier Elements to compose DVDs. However, his current favorite application is Photodex’s Pro Show Gold, which he will use for the demonstration. He will demonstrate how to populate the program’s timeline with digital photos and video clips. Additionally, he will add transitions between each of the pieces of media, titles for selected photos or clips, and then show how to give still photos a sense of movement with zoom and scanning features. Finally, he will show how to incorporate background music to give the DVD a final professional touch. Del is highlighted in “Spotlight on Members” in the upcoming issue of Compu.Gen.
