INFORMATION ON SPEAKERS: Dennis M. Au is a descendant of the Mushrat French; the Canadien pioneers who settled the River Raisin in the eighteenth century. He has a Master’s Degree in history museum studies and American folk life studies from the State University of New York. For fifteen years, he was the assistant director of the Monroe County Historical Museum. He has published articles on French-Canadian folklore and folk life and on the French participation in the Michigan militia during the War of 1812, is author of a book on the Battle of the River Raisin, and has directed the most extensive archaeological excavation of a French house site in Southeastern Michigan. Dennis Au is most known for his research on the old French mushrat traditions for the Smithsonian’s Festival of American Folk Life. Geoff Hoerauf - his roots go back to the Rivard family who initially settled in Detroit and then along the St. Clair River Delta. As a result of his interest in his French Canadian heritage, Geoff joined a local living history group in 1993 - Campeau's Company of the Detroit Militia. Since that time, he has researched the stories, legends, customs, and daily life of Detroit's residents from the 1760s through 1790s. Geoff's research has included acknowledged current sources, as well as contemporary personal diaries, stories, accounts, and letters from Detroit's residents during the 1760 - 1790 time period. From this research, Geoff has developed a presentation that has been well received by many of Southeast Michigan's schools, museums, historical societies, and genealogy groups. Carl Katafiasz -Head of Ellis Reference Library for many years, and Special Collections Specialist for nearly 10 years, Carl Katafiasz has presented numerous genealogy programs at the library: Introduction to Genealogy; Immigration and Passenger Lists; Polish, Irish, German, as well as French-Canadian Genealogy. Featured speaker at various Michigan and Ohio clubs and organizations, Carl has also written and published many genealogical articles for newspapers, libraries, and genealogical societies. Chris Kull - a lifelong resident of Monroe County, has served as Archivist of the Monroe County Historical Commission since 1982. She holds a Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation from Colorado State University. A Life Member of the Monroe County Historical Society, she is also a member of the Michigan Archival Association; additionally, she is Director of Children's Ministries at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Chris’ interest in local history stems from the fact that her ancestors are some of the earliest settlers in Monroe County. Patrick Tucker- A Master's Degree in Anthropology, his interests are historical archaeology and ethno-history of the Maumee River Valley of northwest Ohio. Pat is currently researching the history of French-Canadians and Native Americans of the lower Maumee River 1763-1839 for the Laboratory of Archaeology, Dept of Sociology and Anthropology, University of Toledo, Ohio. Formerly the Staff Archaeologist for an Illinois firm, he is currently a Unit Administrator for the US Army Reserve in Ohio. Whether your ancestors wore blue or gray in the American Civil War, the East Tennessee Historical Society is offering a free workshop to help find your familys Civil War story. The free class will be held 2 to 4 p.m. (Central Time) on Saturday, August 24, 2002, in the Cherry Theatre on the campus of Columbia State Community College in Columbia, Tennessee. The instructor, Dr. George K. Schweitzer, is a popular, nationally known lecturer and author of nineteen genealogy research books. Participants will learn how to determine if an ancestor served in the Civil War and how to locate records for both Confederate and Union veterans. Participants do not need Tennessee ancestors to participate since the information will be useful to researchers regardless of their ancestors home state. Why is the East Tennessee Historical Society bringing free genealogy programs to Middle Tennessee? The classes are a celebration and introduction to a new statewide initiative sponsored by ETHS to track down descendants of Civil War soldiers who lived, fought, or died in the Volunteer State. The new heritage program, Civil War Families of Tennessee, celebrates the unique role of individuals in Tennessees Civil War story. The workshop is co-sponsored locally by Maury County Archives. For additional information about the free workshop contact the Maury County Archives at 931-381-1565 or visit the ETHS web site at http://www.east-tennessee-history.org. Hi listers I have been asked to mention an event on the list to be known as "Family History Roadshow". I would like to stress that whilst OFHS has had some limited involvement in the organising of the day, it is not our event. Instead, the organisers are BBC Radio Oxford in conjunction with Oxfordshire Record Office. "Family History Roadshow" takes place on Tuesday 6 August 2002 from 2.00pm to 5.00pm BST. It will be held at the Oxfordshire Record Office, St Lukes, Temple Road, Cowley, Oxford. It will feature a live radio broadcast from the record office, so those researchers who can't make the day can at least listen to it on the radio. Radio Oxford are inviting researchers to attend the event, and they particularly would like to see :- 1. newcomers to family history come and learn about research in a working record office. 2. experienced researchers who are prepared to lend a hand and spend time guiding the newcomers. 3. those with interesting stories to tell do you have a murderer, transportee, suicide victim etc in the family ? Because of space constraints at the Oxfordshire Record Office, it is necessary for potential attendees to register before the event. To register or to obtain further details, please contact BBC Radio Oxfords "Action Desk" :- telephone : 08459 311222 e-mail : [email protected] Best wishes. Allen County Public Library-Genealogy Department in Fort Wayne, Indiana is NOT closed! Yes, the library is going to expand, and yes, the library will move to an interim location. Yes it is true we will be going through renovation in the future. However the move to our interim location will not be happening until at least July/Aug of next year, 2003. In the interim location, which is located just 4 blocks from the current library, the Genealogy Department will be open to researchers. Until that time our collection is open at its current location (900 Webster St, Fort Wayne) accessible and ready for use as always. We will continue to have the resources of this nationally known collection available both at the current location, at the interim location, and of course in our new improved library after the renovation. Please pass this information on to genealogy societies, family history researchers, and libraries, anyone, any organization interested in family history research. For further information visit our web site www.acpl.lib.in.us, or phone 260-421-1225. We would enjoy having you visit us!
