    1. [GEN-EVENTS-L] Free Workshop-- Columbia, TN-- Discover Your Civil War Ancestors
    2. East Tennessee Historical Society
    3. Whether your ancestors wore blue or gray in the American Civil War, the East Tennessee Historical Society is offering a free workshop to help find your family’s Civil War story. The free class will be held 2 to 4 p.m. (Central Time) on Saturday, August 24, 2002, in the Cherry Theatre on the campus of Columbia State Community College in Columbia, Tennessee. The instructor, Dr. George K. Schweitzer, is a popular, nationally known lecturer and author of nineteen genealogy research books. Participants will learn how to determine if an ancestor served in the Civil War and how to locate records for both Confederate and Union veterans. Participants do not need Tennessee ancestors to participate since the information will be useful to researchers regardless of their ancestor’s home state. Why is the East Tennessee Historical Society bringing free genealogy programs to Middle Tennessee? The classes are a celebration and introduction to a new statewide initiative sponsored by ETHS to track down descendants of Civil War soldiers who lived, fought, or died in the Volunteer State. The new heritage program, “Civil War Families of Tennessee,” celebrates the unique role of individuals in Tennessee’s Civil War story. The workshop is co-sponsored locally by Maury County Archives. For additional information about the free workshop contact the Maury County Archives at 931-381-1565 or visit the ETHS web site at http://www.east-tennessee-history.org. 2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Hi listers This index is now available for purchase from Oxfordshire Family History Society on CD. It is in Adobe Acrobat format, and hence is compatible with most PCs and AppleMac computers. The index gives most details of both parties of all known marriages for which records exist and which took place between 1538 (the earliest start of Parish Registers) and 1837 for the pre-1974 county of Oxfordshire. Records copied include Parish Registers, Bishops Transcripts and early private transcripts made before some registers had disappeared. Quaker marriages carried out in the Banbury area are also included. It must be remembered that many registers have disappeared and so this index cannot be considered as a complete record of all marriages which took place in the county. It is however the best available and most complete source. Cost :- Indexed on Husband's Name - 30.00 pounds Indexed on Wife's Name - 30.00 pounds Both the above on one CD - 50.00 pounds Send order with cheque payable to Oxfordshire Family History Society to :- Dr H A Kearsey Windmill Place Windmill Road Minchinhampton STROUD Glos GL6 9EE UK NOTE: This index does not include the area of North Berkshire now in Oxfordshire. 1. [GEN-EVENTS-L] Conference, Salem, Oregon
    2. Leslie Lawson
    3. Find it in the Past; Preserve it for the Future -- GCO Conference coming up. Salem, Oregon Genealogists have an opportunity on October 4th and 5th to hear Cyndi Howells of "Cyndislist" and more than a dozen outstanding speakers talk about our favorite subject, genealogy. The Genealogical Council of Oregon sponsors a state-wide conference every other year. This event attracts people from all over the state. One year, a California couple on motorcycles dropped in. They heard about the conference when they were on the road and thought it sounded good. They had a perfectly delightful time - as did all of the other attendees. The conference is a bargain. The registration fee includes lunch and dinner as well as options to hear five lectures and two meal speakers per day. People who register before September 1st can take advantage of the early registration discount. That is $50 for one day or $95 for both days. Once you have been to a conference, you know that the classes are only one part of the event. Meeting new people and browsing the exhibit area are two other powerful reasons to attend conferences. You can do both of those at the GCO conference. We're sure that some of Oregon's finest genealogists will attend. We know that the exhibitors will be top-notch. The TreeHouse from Portland will be there with all of the new books. A number of our Oregon genealogical societies have already signed up to be in the exhibitor area. 1. [GEN-EVENTS-L] Program: City Directories 9/7/02 Goshen, NY
    2. Barbara DiMunno
    3. Orange County Genealogical Society 1841 Historic Courthouse, 101 Main Street, Goshen, NY Saturday, September 7, 2002, 10:30 A.M. CITY DIRECTORIES: A VALUABLE RESOURCE ADDRESSES to WARD BOUNDARIES By Marilyn Terry City directories can be used for a wide variety of reasons, the most obvious being the residence of your ancestor. Other things you might learn; occupation, name of spouse, neighbors, churches, cemeteries. Let's say you know your ancestor worked as an insurance agent, do you know which insurance company? Did your ancestor own his home, rent, live in an apartment, or was he a boarder? This program will help you to understand the ins and outs of city directories. There may not be a city directory specific to where your ancestor lived, this program will provide you with ideas on where you might look. The use of a city directory around 1930 will save you a great deal of time when you are researching the 1930 Census, which is now available to the public. ABOUT OUR SPEAKER Marilyn Terry is 1st. Vice-President of the Orange County Genealogical Society and Program Chairperson. She has been interested in genealogy for more than 25 years and has done extensive research using local City Directories. THIS PROGRAM IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC As with most programs if you are traveling any distance it is always wise to call and make sure there aren't any changes in the program time or location. Call Marilyn Terry at 845-562-2749 or you may email her at [email protected] Our monthly meeting will be held at 9:00 A.M., which is open to the public. Why not join us for the meeting and stay for the program. Following the program our research room will be open from Noon to 4:00 P. M.

    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Hi listers A brief reminder that there will be an Oxfordshire Family History Society presence at next Saturday's "Marlow Local and Family History Fair". It takes place at the Court Gardens Leisure Centre, Marlow, Buckinghamshire on Saturday 17 August 2002, commencing at 10.00am and finishing at 4.00pm. The representatives on the Oxfordshire FHS stall will be Howard Fuller and Neil Bradshaw. They will be equipped with computer and printer so that visitors can consult the society's "Search Services". And they will be selling society microfiche and CDs. Full details of what's available can be found on the society's website at www.ofhs.org.uk. Unfortunately, due to space constraints, Neil and Howard will not have the bookstall stock with them, although they will take orders and payment for books, which will be despatched by post within a few days. This is an excellent opportunity for those within travelling distance of Marlow to do their searches and buy their microfiche and CDs without incurring those niggling postal charges. There will also be other societies in attendance on the day, so a visit might well prove to be enjoyable.
