    1. [GEN-EVENTS-L] Next week's Oxfordshire FHS Computer Group meeting
    2. Paul Gaskell
    3. Colleagues The next meeting of the Computer Group of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will be held next Monday 7 October 2002. This meeting sees the Group revert to holding its meetings on the first Monday of alternate months. However, although the night has changed, the venue remains the same, so the meeting will be held at Oxford University Computing Services, 13 Banbury Road, Oxford. This is located just to the north of St Giles. Doors open at 7:15 pm for coffee, with the presentation starting at around 7.30pm. The evening will be hosted by the Computer Group Panel, who will be talking about "Creating family trees and charts". I assume that this will be a demonstration of the charting capabilities of some of the well-known software programmes, such as Family Tree Maker and Generations. The society's bookstall does not usually attend Computer Group meetings. However, I can confirm that there will be a small bookstall presence next Monday, which will give attendees the chance to purchase :- 1. vouchers for the PRO 1901 census. 2. a few of the books that have been added to the society's bookstall in the last month or so. 3. the CDs produced by the society including indexes to the 1861, 1871 and 1891 census, the Oxfordshire Marriage Index and the new Oxfordshire Family Historian Volumes 1 to 11. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions to get there, please see the map linked to the society's website at :- www.ofhs.org.uk For a list of future meetings of the OFHS see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html Any queries, please contact me off-list. 1. [GEN-EVENTS-L] Maryland, Fred,Co.- Oct 12 - 19th Century Mourning Practices
    2. Lecture: 19th Century Mourning Practices Date: October 12, 2002 1 PM Speaker: Sue Shatto of Victorian Millinery of Frederick, MD Presented by: Frederick County (MD) Genealogical Society, Inc. Cost: Free Place: 110 East Patrick St. Frederick, MD - The new C. Burr Artz Main Branch Library of the Frederick County Public Libraries - Community Room The Frederick County Genealogical Society in conjunction with the Maryland Room of the C. Burr Artz Branch of the Frederick County Public Libraries will host a talk on "19th Century Mourning Practices" by Ms Sue Shatto. Frecogs meeting will return to Homewood at Crumland Farms on November 9th at 1:00 PM, topic "Researching in Pennsylvania" by Alfreda Patton Davidson, professional genealogist from York, PA. Cost $5 door charge to public, $2 for Frecogs members. The Maryland Room will be open from 10 AM to 5 PM and is Frederick County Public Libraries archival department for regional history and genealogical resources. In recognition of the 1852 establishment of Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, Ms Shatto will be sharing ways people expressed their sorrow in times past. She will be comparing today's mourning with mourning the dead in the 1800's. Other topics include the view of death, mourning fashions and fabrics, etiquette, funeral practices and the funeral industry. Sue is the owner of the Victorian Millinery in Frederick - making and dealing in vintage hats, period clothes, lecturing to other organizations and teaching related topics at Frederick Community College. Mourning could be viewed as the social diffusion of grief through sympathy; but as a practice, can help bind families and communities. As a part of family history, understanding the treatment of death over 100 years ago can lead to greater understanding of our ancestors. Strict codes of behavior were a part of the Victorian life which was ruled by strict adherence to seemingly endless books on self-improvement and etiquette. Sue will explain the practices and talk about the literature concerning mourning rules and customs. The lecture will be part of the regular monthly meeting of the genealogical society, and is open to the public at no charge and no reservations are required. Some restoration is in progress. One room is being restored as a museum of the school and community. The names of those who graduated or attended are being compiled. Stories, oral histories, and relics of the old school days are being sought for compilation and for display in the museum. A booklet about the school has been completed. Copies are available. Many of the faces in the school pictures of the 1930's-1940's that are posted on the picture pages of the Library of Congress Web. page have been identified. Contact person is Col. (RET) Richard R. Cook, 1331 Peachtree Avenue, Woodville, Georgia 30669 He may be on the internet, but I do not have his e-mail address I am cross posting this to several other county lists as you never know who knows who or is related to who. My mother was the valedictorian of a class of four in 1936 when there were only 11 grades. One girl dropped out to get married just before graduation. My mother was the only girl (maybe). At least two others of the three were boys. It was so dry that year that they almost did not have any flowers for decorations. Somebody got some sweet peas from somebody's yard in the community for decorations. My sister in Florida got Col. Cook's permission to post this. Notices were sent by regular mail, but many were returned. The reunion has been held every two years since 1996. Please pass this notice along to anyone who might be interested and post it to any other places on the internet that you think might be appropriate.
