If some more pople do not register by Thursday or Friday, the WRITING AND PUBLISHING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY Seminar scheduled for Angelina College on 3/1/03 will be canceled for lack of interest. There is still time to register for it or the one on GENEALOGY AND TECHNOLOGY scheduled for 3/08/03 which also may be canceled due to lack of interested. If this seemingly lack of interest continues and is reflected in registration for the summer conference, July 24-26, 2003, and considering that the college budget has been cut by 7%, it is very likely that no other genealogy events will be sponsored by AC after that date. This would be a big blow to genealogy programs in East Texas and the Southwest because Angelina College is the only public college in this area sponsoring programs of this type. Capacity for any genealogy event is 125 people, but we must have at least six people to make a class. These events are important to the genealogy community regardless of who teaches them. In the meantime, Mr. Johnson and I have two very fine all-day seminars that can be booked through the college for a group will to pay travel expenses and the regular adjunct instructor contact hour fee. Just as long as we can talk about and promote Angelina College. Two reasonably priced seminars for your group within a reasonable travel distance of Lufkin, Texas. I am a regular member of this list. I am also an adjunct instructor in genealogy at Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas. This is what I do in addition to working on mine and my husband's families. Please pass this information along to anyone whom you think might be interested. The bulk mail notice was mailed out last week. Perhaps a little late, but then the college calendar/time-table and the time-table for genealogy events does not always match up. Registration form and contact information are further down in the message. You can call in that you would like to come and pay when you get there if we have enough people to make the class. Regular Meeting of East Texas Genealogical Society, Tyler, TX Saturday, March 8, 2008 Tyler Public Library - Taylor Auditorium 2:00 p.m. Speaker: Helen Garrison Program: "Cynthia Ann Parker, A Love Story" Our speaker, Helen Garrison, has been the featured storyteller at numerous festivals and events including the Texas State Genealogical Society Conference and the North Fort Worth Historical Society where she performed as Cynthia Ann Parker. She is a member of storytelling organizations in both Texas and Oklahoma, including, but not limited to, the Tarrant Area Guild of Storytellers, the Tejas Storytelling Association, and the Texas Historical Society. Cynthia Ann Parker was taken by Comanche Indians when she was a child and raised as one of their own. The story of this pioneer woman's unusual life shows her deep devotion to the Comanches who became her people. Helen Garrison (Granny G.), dressed in costume, will tell the thrilling story of Cynthia Ann's life in a first person narrative portrayal. Following a short refreshment period, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Computer Interest Group of the East Texas Genealogical Society will meet. Larry Oliver will present a video and host a discussion on "Global Positioning Systems". East Texas Genealogical Society represent six counties which are Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk and Smith counties. Folks, For those of you who do not know about the Canadian Bill S-13 and hearings, you should go to the link below to read about the problems Gordon Watts has found with this bill. In summary, the S-13 proposal would not allow access to all of the census contents for 112 years, and such limited portions which are available would require the viewer to not share the information with others by the signing of a special document, and other regulations that may be modified by various government parties. This would be effective for the 1911 census - due to be released under the 92 year rule in June of this year. Hearings will be held this Thursday. If you have Canadian research interests and have not contacted the committee holding these hearings, scroll down and do it quickly! Please make your statements to the committee brief and pointed. Gordon Watts has completed a detailed analysis of the problems, so folks would be most effective in summarizing their beliefs. For example, from my perpsective: This bill does not abide by the recommendations of the special study conducted by the Canadian government nor the tens of thousands of people who have petitioned the Canadian legislature to release the post-1901 census in the same way every other Canadian census has been released. The study recommended legislation to remove all ambiguity and release this historical data, as intended and desired by census contemporaries. Privacy legislation should address contemporary issues, not historical facts. There has never been a complaint about the millions of records released in pre-1911 census. The overwhelming public response to the online release of the 1901 Canadian census and the 1905 Western province census should underscore this consistent record. Restricting census information access and dissemination for 20 years in addition to any privacy period (currently 92 years) will severely hamper the detailed analysis and collaboration of millions of family history researchers. Every piece of information contained in a census is a clue for the reconstitution of family groups - which must include collateral lines for proper evidential analysis. Requiring persons accessing this data in the 20 year purgatory period to not disclose the data to other persons is a wasteful administration cost, fodder for large scale civil disobedience and an immediate test case. The multi-disciplinary education process of family history research has far-reaching benefits for individuals and society. People without formal educations work side by side with highly educated people. Older generations mentor younger generations. Younger generations share new tools and concepts. It is a collaborative and synergistic community. May I also suggest: Please post your events as soon as they are planned (as well as when it gets closer to the actual date) so that we can get them on our busy schedules. Some months fill up quickly, especially during the summer and around national conferences. We like to get to as many good events as possible, and have enough time to make travel plans when necessary. Another good reason to list them early: some of us post events on our websites. The sooner we post them, the more people will see them and attend! Thanks! Hello listers Wednesday 11 June 2003 marks the second Family Tree Day in Oxfordshire, which on this occasion will be held at the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies. This will be a family history extravaganza not to be missed. Hosted by the staff of the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies in conjunction with the Oxfordshire Family History Society, the day will have numerous attractions including :- 1. computer demonstrations by some of the members of the societys Computer Group. Topics likely to be covered include family history on the internet, family history data on CD and genealogy computer packages. 2. the chance to browse and make purchases from the societys extensive bookstall. 3. the opportunity to make purchases of CD and microfiche from the society without incurring those irritating postal charges. The societys computerised search services and birth brief index will also be available for consultation. However, probably the best feature of Family History Day will be the opportunity for family historians to consult records of relevance to their research with an expert at their elbow. The researcher will be able to use the Centres records and resources, and then to discuss their problems and findings with members of the society committee and other experienced family historians. We cant guarantee that visitors will leave the venue with a complete pedigree back to William the Conqueror, but nevertheless we hope that the day will prove to be an enjoyable and thought-provoking event. Family Tree Day will be held on Wednesday 11 June 2003 at :- Centre for Oxfordshire Studies Central Library Westgate Oxford OX1 1DJ The event will start at 12.00 noon and end at 5.00pm. Admission is free and all visitors are welcome. Further information about Family Tree Day and about the Oxfordshire Family History Society can be obtained from the societys website at :- www.ofhs.org.uk Further information about the Centre for Oxfordshire Studies and how to find it can be obtained from the record office website at :- http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/index/things_to_do/cos.htm Those with further specific queries can contact me by e-mail and I will do my best to help. In addition to the presentations, eGenConference will also have a virtual exhibit area where participants can visit virtual booths, view and demo products and purchase items online. There will be rooms to pick up press materials, view presentations and obtain literature. There will be an online school called "The Genealogy School" where participants can take lessons on a variety of genealogy topics. "We are very excited to participate as a major sponsor for eGenConference and to reach out to a worldwide genealogy audience. The conference offers participants the opportunity to share in the wealth of information available only at major genealogy conferences, which up to this time have realized only limited audiences due to travel expenses.
