6th Annual Professional Management Conference Orlando FL, September 3, 2003 -- Early Registration Deadline Fast Approaching The Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) is holding its 6th Annual Professional Management Conference (PMC) on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 at the Renaissance Orlando Resort at SeaWorld. The PMC will be held in conjunction with Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) and Florida State Genealogical Society's 2003 Conference at the Resort from Sept. 3-6. The APG, founded in 1979, is an independent, worldwide organization of professional genealogists whose growing membership has just passed the 1,400 mark. APG's objectives are to support professional genealogists in all phases of their work, to promote professional standards in genealogical research, writing and speaking and to educate the membership and public through ublications and lectures. The all day Professional Management Conference - "Where Family History Professionals Meet" - has become extremely popular with "professional" genealogists - not only those who work for a fee, but every "serious" genealogist who wants to approach genealogical research in a professional manner. The conference is designed to help beginning to veteran professional genealogists, analysts, librarians, researchers, teachers, writers and others in family history to balance a variety of skills necessary to run a successful business. "It takes lots of talent to balance computer technology with lecturing, research, and other skills and also find a way to a business profit," says Eileen Polakoff, PMC coordinator. "Attendees say they learn more about their business in one day at the PMC than all year on their own," Polakoff says. "We can almost guarantee you will make contacts there that will send you business." The lecture program provides a choice from a wide range of topics, presented by some of the best known professional genealogists in the business: "Word Processing Tricks for Professional Genealogists" by Pamela Boyer Porter, CGRS, CGL "But I'm Ethical! What Good is the Professional Review Committee to Me?" Elissa Scalise Powell, CGRS "Conversations with Old Houses: What They Can Tell Us and How to Ask" by Helen F. M. Leary, CG, CGL, FASG "Genealogy. . . Where's the Money? Making this Career Work for You!" by Louise St. Denis "Privacy: What It Is, Who It Belongs To, Why It Matters" by Donn Devine, CG, CGI "APG and Genealogy Education" by Tony Burroughs "The Discipline of Writing: Teach Yourself to Express Yourself" by Sherry Irvine, CGRS, FSA(Scot) "Researching On-site for Clients" by James W. Warren "Branch Out: Expanding Your Business Beyond Client Research" by Paula Stuart Warren, CGRS In addition to the lectures, the PMC provides a great opportunity to meet and network with other professional genealogists, including a sit-down luncheon which is included in the registration fee. Also included is the chance to win valuable door prizes provided by many well known vendors. And the first 50 APG members to register are also eligible for the PMC registration refund drawing at the luncheon. The registration fee for early registration (before July 15) is $95 for APG members and $120 for non-APG members. After July 15th the fee is $135 for all. To attend the PMC, registration for the FGS/FSGS Conference (at least for September 3) is also required. For more information on the PMC visit the APG Conference site: http://www.apgen.org/conferences/index.html or call 303-422-9371 To register for the Conference go to the FGS Conference website: http://www.fgs.org/2003conf/conf-order.asp Any questions? Colleagues The next meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will be held on Monday 23 June 2003 at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford. Doors open at 7:15 pm for coffee, help with both genealogy and computers, bookstall, exchange journals etc. The subject of the talk at 8:00pm is "Was she a murderess ?". This will be presented by our old friend Richard Radcliffe, and will be preceded by a brief AGM. Many members have recently expressed their gratitude at receiving the cumulative index to Volumes 12 and 13 of the Oxfordshire Family Historian. The journals in these volumes were published in 1998 and 1999, which obviously creates a problem for those who have joined the society in the last three years. I can confirm that the bookstall will be carrying stocks of the six journals which comprise Volumes 12 and 13 at the meeting. These editions will be being sold at nominal cost. All members, potential members and their guests are welcome. For directions to get there, see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/ExeterHall.html For a list of future meetings of the OFHS see :- http://www.ofhs.org.uk/meetings.html#exeter Any queries, please contact me off-list.
