    1. [GEN-EVENTS-L] Regional Archives Workshop
    2. Pamela Boyer Porter, CGRS, CGL
    3. Earlier this week, Jody Thompson mentioned Georgia Archives Week from October 5-11. This is a perfect time to learn how to dig into and use those original records at the brand-new Georgia Archives or your own state archives. The Regional In-depth Genealogical Studies Alliance (RIGSA) is presenting a one-week hands-on workshop from October 6-10 at the Georgia Archives facility. This workshop deals primarily with the records of Georgia and the records of other southern states held by the National Archives Southeast Region in Atlanta. If you aren't interested in southern research, DON'T STOP READING. This workshop teaches students how to locate records on a specific topic and then how to read, interpret, and analyze the records. These skills can be applied to records from Alaska to New York to Mississippi. For more information about the Georgia RIGSA workshop from October 5-11 and the National Archives Southwest Region RIGSA workshop in Fort Worth, Texas, from October 27-31, visit www.RIGSAlliance.org or send an e-mail to [email protected] Pamela Boyer Porter, CGRS, CGL Regional In-depth Genealogical Studies Alliance, Inc. 3. EARLY MIGRATION ROUTES TO BE FOCUS OF GENEALOGY MEETING The East Texas Genealogical Society and the Anderson County Genealogical Society will present a special program Saturday, August 2, at 1:30 pm, in Palestine at the Public Library, 1101 Cedar Street. The meeting is free and anyone interested in family research is invited to attend. Pre-registration is not required. The Appalachian Mountains and hostile Indians were the primary barriers that blocked migration and influenced the establishment of early wagon roads. By locating these migration routes and reversing the paths, researchers can determine the most likely original location of their ancestors. Guest speaker, Don Raney, will use maps to locate primary overland migration routes used by pioneers from colonial settlements in New England, Virginia and South Carolina between 1700 and 1815. Mr. Raney is a sixth generation Texan who has been an active genealogist for over twenty-five years. He currently teaches Beginner & Intermediate Genealogy courses at Richland College. He is a past Director of the Dallas Genealogy Society and GENTECH and a life member of the San Jacinto Descendants. He has been a speaker at numerous conferences and society meetings thought out the state. For more information, call Jane at 903-894-6027 or Scott at 903-592-6576 ([email protected]).

The aim is to allow participants the flexibility to establish and to pursue their own research program with all the advice and support they may need. 1. [GEN-EVENTS-L] Column - Comments & Upcoming Events
    2. Lynna Kay Shuffield
    3. 07/17/2003 -- Are Libraries Obsolete? My column last week generated a lot of e-mails and letters! What a great discussion. This important issue as it relates to genealogical research and the future of libraries and books. Here are a couple of representative comments from my readers: Jeannie Henning of Wheeler, Texas wrote, ”I live in a little town of about 1,200 people. We have a small library that has some local genealogy. I use to help other people sometimes. I am not originally from Wheeler so it doesn't help me in my own research. The nearest town with a good size library with a good genealogy dept is nearly 100 miles from us. I work 6 days a week and that only leaves Sunday and most libraries are not open. I would like to be able to join an online library if there is such a thing.” Lou Parris shared, “Well, I certainly hope not! I am very afraid that the current approach to genealogy searching (quick and easy via the Internet) is generating a lot of false data. Scholarship is still scholarship - regardless of the means of access - and everything stills needs to be properly verified. Librarians know how to do this - and other folks see it as a real drag. I for one will continue to trust those who have spent their lives and careers studying genealogical research methods - not the quick answers provided by the Internet. OK, I have to say that: 1) I really haven't done a lot of genealogical research. My cousin, a history professor, has done quite a lot of meticulous research, and I'm leaning on his work, and 2) gulp, yes, I am a librarian (though not a genealogical one)!” Thank you to everyone who responded and hopefully this topic will generate discussions at your local genealogy or historical society meetings. = = = = = = Upcoming Speaking Engagements Thursday, 24 July 2003 - 1960 PC USERS GROUP GENEALOGY SIG - TOPIC: Civil War Resources - 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cypress Creek Christian Church & Community Center, 6823 Cypresswood Dr., 2nd Floor Room #30, Spring, Texas 77379 (off Cypresswood Drive, near Steubner Airline).
