    1. New to list
    2. Alicia Brown
    3. Hello, I've recently subscribed to this list but have seen no postings yet. To make sure I am on the right list, I thought I would post what I am interested in. We are in the process of forming a Genealogical Society in my community. There is also discussion of publishing a Gen. Bulletin. I am interested in learning from other editors what type information is usually published and if there are certain guidelines (or laws) which govern what information MAY be published. (For example, on birth records). Any information you would be willing to share would be appreciated. Sincerely, Alicia Brown

    2. Camilla von Massenbach
    3. If you are researching relatives in the UK, we would like to invite you to join us on the IIGS IRC. We will be meeting every Tuesday from 20:00 GMT on channel #IIGS-UKgen. This meeting is intended as a get together for people researching UK ancestors, both from in the UK and from outside the UK. The intention is to have more regular communication between people.. e.g. If you are having a discussion on the UK and Ireland newsgroup then bring it with you and have an interactive discussion about it. Bring your surnames and see if anyone else is researching in your area. Bring your books with you and see if you can help others. We are hoping that this meeting will become a regular place for people to meet and discuss UK genealogy. If you want to use our server for your own genealogy meetings.. just do it !! e.g. County meetings, One name study meetings, or just having an interactive chat with someone you have been talking to on the Newsgroups or via e-mail. The more YOU want to do the better the session will be. Even if you just pop in to see what's happening please give it a go... The IIGS IRC service is the IIGS's first tool for genealogists, hosted by Rootsweb. Visit our web site at http://www.iigs.org/ . Set up exclusively for genealogy, the IIGS IRC is open 24 hours per day so genealogists around the world can meet. Also, I am publishing a biography on an ancestor, and will appreciate any advice anyone can give. I have photos, and I was planning to use the book function in the new Family Tree Maker version 4.0. If you have any suggestions please send them along. I might have overlooked something obvious or put something stupid in it, I am not sure... 1. Re: Advertising
    2. I am interested in advertising my Raymonds Original Pollbooks series, and my British Genealogical Bibliographies series, in any genealogical journals world-wide which accept adverts. I prefer to insert leaflets rather than print ads. If it is possible for you to insert leaflets, please advise: 1. How many you could distribute 2. When you would need them 3. What your charges would be If you cannot insert leaflets - and I realize that this is difficult in the U.S. - I may still be interested in printing an ad. Please advise your rates, and indicate your circulation. If you cannot do either, but know other ways in which I could distribute leaflets, please let me know. I'm also working on a family history, but its still a year or two away. I have been producing a newsletter for that family and have about 180 subscribers, and another 200-300 names in my mailing list. Libbie

    3. Hi Pam, Who wrote the book? I will probably order it -- it sounds great! I have a question for the group. I'm working on my first book. It is an early group of tax lists for a Virginia county. I have high hopes because it's an important list, never before published or microfilmed. I would really like to hear everybody's thoughts on whether to publish and sell this myself or to sell the mss. to Gen Pub, Iberian or another publisher. Has anyone had experience doing either? 1. A Helpful Book
    2. Pamela G Hurak
    3. A couple of days ago, I received a book ordered from Willow Bend Books ( http://www.mediasoft.net/ScottC ) called The What Shall I Write Handbook For Editors of Family and Genealogy Society Newsletters. I had ordered the book more out of curiousity than all else and it turned out to be a wonderful surprize. It was like receiving a well-written copy of an editors free-writing or sounding board. All kinds of ideas for articles or subjects and so forth. As a rather new editor/publisher, I am always trying to keep my eyes out for a 'fresh look' into article ideas and other things to include to make my newsletter more interesting and beneficial for the subscribers. I found this book wonderful because it really is full of ideas. It was only $16 plus postage and is available from Willow Bend Books 39475 Tollhouse Road Lovettsville, VA 20180-9703 willowbend@mediasoft.net or call (540)822-5292 If any of you are like me and don't have a file cabinet full of articles ready for print ahead of time (or would like to) this $16 (plus postage) is a pretty good deal. Pamela G. Hurak ResearchVA@juno.com Editor/Publisher of THE SOUTHSIDE RESEARCHER Note: The newsletter that I publish is a regional genealogical newsletter. I'd really like to hear from an editor who works with a family or surname newsletter and know if this handbook was as interesting for someone writing from that view. Did any one else order this book?
