    3. I run Windows XP, use an efficient anti virus programme and have a firewalI. I use OE as my default browser and like most listers I get spam, reading advice here and in magazines I decided to give Firefox a trial. I downloaded Firefox but kept OE as my default and used Firefox occasionally. I understand that it is quite acceptable to have both programmes on the same computer but it soon became very obvious that downloading sites from Google took much longer through Firefox than through OE. Why is this? Caribou

    3. By "OE" I assume you are actually referring to Internet Explorer - "IE"? Outlook Express is a program for handling your email messages. It is not a browser like Firefox or Internet Explorer. The speed of your viewing of pages usually depends on the service provided by your internet service provider. Or, it could be due to the sites you are visiting being very active, and consequently their servers are slowing the "traffic" down. Firefox is a more secure browser than IE. You can even make it far more secure by installing many of the add-ons available free from the Mozilla site https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ Yes, you can have both browsers (or more, if you wish) installed on your computer without causing problems. You can uninstall Firefox but you can't remove Internet Explorer (it is part of the Windows OS). > -----Original Message----- > From: caribou@waitrose.com > Sent: Sat, 9 Aug 2008 11:31:59 +0100 > To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Outlook Express+Firefox > > I run Windows XP, use an efficient anti virus programme and have a > firewalI. Why is this? In addition to what Nat said, are you on broadband but also have an internal modem? Are you sure that your settings are correct so that when you use Firefox it is using your broadband connection? bob gillis

    3. Question - if you have broadband and can connect to the Internet, how is it possible to be using a different modem? 3. I just tested it and it really does take a little longer for Firefox to open a page than IE 6. You might concievably have a very different experience with IE7, which is a resource hog among other things. (I'll switch to Firefox for my default browser before I ever install IE 7.) Neither took very long, however, atleast not with a simple page, and not all that long with MSNBC's home page. If Firefox has more security that may cause pages to take longer to download. I don't see any systematic or large difference in the amount of system resources they use. I dunno. It's a mystery. If you're computer is running slowly in general, you could need to clean your disk and defrag. You need several gigabytes of space free for Windows XP to run properly. Or you could have RAM issues. This year's antivirus software in most brands really hog system resources, typically using 60,000 to 100,000 megs of RAM,which overwhelms every computer I've been on that has 512 megs of RAM. I ordered more RAM cards for my machine and that solved the problem, except while in Second Life. I switched to BitDefender, which gets good reviews and is light on system resources, and that stopped. One other thing; my memory issues got much worse when I installed the XP Service Pack 3. It makes all kinds of things run on your machine that never ran before and they gobble memory. There could also be something about how your security settings are set up in one or both browsers.
