    3. I have a number of photos taken about 100 years ago. They are small in size and need magnification to identify people etc.... and 'zooming' is unsatisfactory due to loss of definition. I have the images now stored in my PC and find the very best way to get magnification and fine definition I open them with Windows Picture and Fax and click onto 'Actual Size' when the photo appears it would be perhaps 6 or 8 times larger than the original photo and the fine features of people are remarkably good. I would like to retain the images in this expanded form and cannot find a means to do this. Is it possible? .... and how? Old Joe ........... who is nearly as old as the photos and 'very low tech'

    3. Hi Joe, What I would probably do is use a good printscreen program to capture a screenshot. 3. An option if you scan more small photos is to enlarge them when you scan them. An example would be x 400% with labeling (example): SMITH, John ca 1889 (bw x 400%) I always do them in black and white and also in color (even the black and whites). -----Original Message----- From: gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Art Seddon Sent: Monday, July 14, 2008 1:02 AM To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Old Photos Hi Joe, What I would probably do is use a good printscreen program to capture a screenshot. 3. Hi Joe Like you I am getting on and rather low tech as far as computers go but this may help. If you have the program Adobe Photoshop, you can open up the photos in this program, click on menu item "image" select the sub item "image size" and type in the size of the image desired making sure that the small box titled "resample image" is checked. This should make the picture bigger without reducing the resolution. (I think it does it by guessing what adjacent pixels contain). If you dont have photoshop, there may be a similar feature in other photo manipulation programs but I dont know. Hope this helps Best Regards Brian Newman -------------------------------------------------- From: "Joe Twitchin" <jo.boy@bigpond.com> Sent: Monday, July 14, 2008 2:24 AM To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Old Photos > I have a number of photos taken about 100 years ago. > They are small in size and need magnification to identify people etc.... > and 'zooming' is unsatisfactory due to loss of definition. > I have the images now stored in my PC and find the very best way to get > magnification and fine definition I open them with Windows Picture and Fax > and click onto 'Actual Size' when the photo appears it would be perhaps 6 > or 8 times larger than the original photo and the fine features of people > are remarkably good. > I would like to retain the images in this expanded form and cannot find a > means to do this. > Is it possible? .... and how? > Old Joe ........... who is nearly as old as the photos and 'very low tech' >

    3. I found two ways to deal with this problem. When I was going around it, the best program I had for black adn white photos was Ulead Photo Express, which does a nice job of cleaning them up. That is actually waht I used on most of my mother's collection of old family photos, which date from the mid 19th century. Failing that, you could use Paint Shop Pro, and take one of the free online classes in how to use it. You'll only need the first set of lessons to learn how to clean up a photo, fix coloring, clarify it, sharpen it, and that sort of thing.
