What's the meaning of shareware? Can you download several to a folder? Is it safe? I have a awful blue on my computer and a fish scene that has got to go. Thanks Pat
Pat, >What's the meaning of shareware? Can you download several to a folder? Is >it safe? I have a awful blue on my computer and a fish scene that has got to >go. Shareware is a try-before-you-buy type of program. Usually with features disabled or a time limit as to how long you can use it before it expires. You are free to pass the program on to others (in the unregistered version), hence the name shareware. Once the program is registered, you may not legally pass it to someone else. Art
Share-ware is usually a program that you download or get on some sort of demo disk that you are free to use for a limited amount of time, but you are then expected to pay a small fee if you want to continue to use it. I certainly would not reccomend that anyone download any shareware orfreeware (no fee - ever) from a spam email. I have seen several copies of something about a fishy screen saver. I understand that screensavers can be Trojan Horses, Worms, spyware or just plain Viruses. I do not know if this one is bad, but I wouldn't trust anything that I get from a spam message. Shareware is a term for applications available on a trial basis, usually but not always on the Internet. For example, the application I use to manage my genealogy database is Brother's Keeper. BK is shareware. I tried it. I liked it. I registered with the author. A site you might wish to visit as www.tucows.com. It has a lot of shareware on the site. In my opinion screensavers are superfluous. regards, Ken ----- Original Message ----- From: "pat nix" <pnix@accessatc.net> To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 23, 2004 7:34 PM Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Screen Savers > What's the meaning of shareware? Pat, to change the appearance of your Desktop and create a screensaver, I can recommend Webshots. Not only can you download photographs from all over the world, you can add your own photographs to either the on-line collection or into the Webshots desktop manager. You can store and share your photos on-line, making them available to the general public or to only those you invite to view them. I have used this service for some years and it is great: http://www.webshots.com/ For sharing research photos on-line with relatives this is a good service to use. And you can search the photos available to find views of your relatives home town, too.
