I can't tell you the proper size, that depends on how the graphic is going to be used. But, I can suggest that you try studying this site for some valuable pointers on photo size/resolution for various purposes. http://www.scantips.com/ There are some offers for software there, it isn't really a commercial site, but it has links to some good deals in software. I think that one of the best deals for a graphics program that will do a lot of manipulating your graphics files is found at: http://www.irfanview.com/ IrfanView is a free viewer which does resizing and so much more.
