    3. Ron, I do not know about the download process from LDH as I do not use it to gather my data, since it brings too much junk with it. What I do is: Open notepad You can toggle between notepad and the Family Search site by clicking the icon on the status bar at the bottom of the page Highlight all the data on the page that I want to obtain Click Ctrl+C to copy the material Place your cursor in notepad Click Ctrl+V and it pastes the highlighted data into notepad You can copy one page at a time; one after the other into notepad. When you have all the information you plan to obtain; you can either save it to the My doucments section or put it into any program that accepts text. Notepad is a handy little program that comes on Windows based systems and when you copy tables and colored selections into it, you only get the text. If you are interested, play with it and see if it will help you do what you need. There are many keystrokes that make things much easier here is a list of some of them: ALT + TAB -- Cycles through open applications CTRL + ESC -- Brings up Start menu CTRL + Z -- Undo CTRL + Y -- Redo CTRL + A -- Select all CTRL + C -- Copies selected material CTRL + V -- Pastes selected material Good Luck, Virginia L. 3. Art, Possibly, I should not have termed it in that way. However, I consider anything besides the text necessary to supply the data as junk. In many online setups there are tables and colored background and other extraneous material. All of it takes up space in your computer and can become a problem. I remove all of it and keep only the text of the data I want. I have found notepad to be a very handy tool. When I am compiling CDs of images of actual records, I use notepad to make my indexes. When doing marriage records I can scan a record, have notepad open in two windows and do a brides index in one and a grooms index in the other. When I have completed the indexes I drop each of them into Word and sort them into alphabetical order and my indexes are done. Then they can be linked to the images. Regards, Virginia

    3. A friend suggests that we should reformat and maybe fit a new hard disk to my pc. (Other people have been using my pc whilst I was away) I use XP Professional. My family history is on Family Tree Maker v6.0. My friend is concerned at the possibility that in reformatting we might lose all the information. Could someone please advise what he should do. I do transfer the data to CD periodically but these seems to be in a form that is not alterable. I am not very computer literate, so will just pass on any advice to my friend. Many thanks, Mike Berrell (Stockport)
