It is called the "tray". These are items that are running in the background and usually do not have much effect on system performance. The items on the desktop are shortcuts to programs. They are not running. Their purpose is just for quick access to frequently used programs. They allow you to start a program without having to go into the Start > Program routine all the time. Same thing with the favorite list. Art

Pat, no book will tell you what is necessary in your Task Bar (on the left hand end), simply because every one's needs are different. Any items you place in your Task Bar (at the left hand end) are just shortcuts to the programs so they do not impact in any significant way on the running of your computer. The icons on the right hand end (near the clock) however, are programs you have running at start-up and are the ones to look at if you want to conserve your computer's resources. Many will be essential, but you may have some that really don't need to be active all the time. Again, that is for you to decide as your needs may be different to anyone else. The icons in the middle represent the programs you have currently started running. They will disappear when you close the program down. Just as a point of interest, I have no icons on the left hand of my Task Bar. I use other methods of accessing programs without the need for icons there or on the Desktop. One of these is a program called Command Creator which utilises the WIN key and the RUN command: http://www.jiisoft.com/ Lance -----Original Message----- From: pat nix [mailto:pnix@accessatc.net] Sent: Monday, 23 August 2004 10:40 AM To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Task bar What is necessary in your task bar?
