Older versions of Family Tree Maker were a real pain with GEDCOM files I always found. Thankfully, things have changed with FTM and they moved into the new century as a user-friendly application. So it could be your new found relative's FTM is of an older version. Have you tried importing it into a new blank file in Legacy?
