Pauline - it is quite possible the file you received is labeled as a GEDCOM but is actually a FTW (Family Tree Maker) file. This often occurs if file extensions are hidden. The file you have may actually be filename.GED.FTW If you are still having problems, e-mail it to me off the list and I will try to convert it for you.
