I use Legacy as > my genealogy program , and I am stumped !!! All GEDCOM files can be oped in a text document but they are a real pain to read but is one way to see if it is the file or the software. Another problem could be that your version of GEDCOM & his are not compatible as one of you has a much older version than the other. -- Gary in Sunny Queensland, Australia. www.sunzine.net/rockhampton Genealogy Page http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~liddellfamily/

    1. [GEN-COMP-TIPS] New External Hard Drive - Need Help
    2. Becky Pleiman
    3. Early this evening, I purchased a new External Hard Drive (Western Digital-My Book), 160GBs, installed the drivers (I am a Windows 98 SE user) ... then connected the HD to the computer ... then saved a huge folder, most of my copies of census records (jpeg files), onto the new HD. I can read them using, for example, Adobe PhotoShop. As far as I can tell, everything is working perfectly. The HD came with no back-up instructions, no software. No instructions or recommendations for installing system files. What should I un-do, re-do ... to this new external hard drive? Thank you, Becky

    3. External hard drives work just like an internal hard drive in most respects. You can use a backup program to backup files to it. You can use "drag and drop" in Windows Explorer to copy files over onto the external drive. You can work with files saved on an external drive just as you would normally. Some external drives come with software which allows "one touch" backup - yours obviously didn't (neither did mine :-)). So, if it is working fine, there is nothing else you need to do except keep making good use of it :-). If you do have any queries, you will probably find a user's manual in PDF format on the CD which came with the drive. > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Sun, 7 Jan 2007 20:01:27 -0800 (PST) > To: [email protected] > Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] New External Hard Drive - Need Help > > Early this evening, I purchased a new External Hard > Drive (Western Digital-My Book), 160GBs, installed the > drivers (I am a Windows 98 SE user) ... then connected > the HD to the computer ... then saved a huge folder, > most of my copies of census records (jpeg files), onto > the new HD. 3. There should be no problem, as far as I know. From what you say everything is working fine. Those external hard drives are virtually plug and play, atleast with Windows XP and USB ports. Are you having a problem?
