The census? Not Ancestry's fault - unless when you look at the actual census document you can see that they mistranscribed it, which is easy to do. Those documents are often not easy for anybody to read, adn certain letters, like n and s, are frequently misperceived. Our ancestors couldn't spell their names and often couldn't pronounce them either, and they often changed their names in quixotic ways. Census takers often mangled them. My own ancestry is full of examples. You can report Ancestry.com's errors to ancestry.com, but no way to fix errors in the census! Spelling problems and variations in ancestors' names is a common problem. You just ahve to be aware of it and search for various ways teh names might have been spelled. I have more ancestors I couldn't even find until I asked for help from people better at it, or even people expert on that family group who were albe to tell me the mispellings and variant forms that had been used with that name. Some of them are pretty wild.
