I have made a transcription of the 1790 Census for a town in Excel 2000. The columns are (a) # in Census Order, (B) Surname, (C) Given, (D) Title, (E) Men, (F) Boys, (G) Females, (H) Other, (I) Comments and some administrative columns. If the spreadsheet is sorted in Census # and I want to search for a person, I can enter the surname and go to the first occurrence of the name. I would like to be able to search on the surname/given name combination. However the Search Screen is over the surname and I have to close search to see the complete name. The Search Screen does not move as in WORD 2000 so that the target can be read. I can sort the transcription in Surname, Given Name order. But then I loose the ability to see the neighbours in the enumeration. Is there a way to make the Search Screen move in Excel as it does in WORD. I can import the Excel file into a table in a WORD document, but can I sort on Surname/Given? I think that I can merge the Surname, Given and Title columns in a WORD table into one column, with commas separating. bob gillis
Bob, What you should be using for your desired results is a database program. You could Import your Excel table into that and set up the queries any way you wanted. If you don't have Access, there are some free ones available. One is from IBM called DB2 (you have to register with IBM to download it). The other is Open Office Suite which contains a XML based database. Both are very good. If you don't like either of these options, do a Google search and look for others. The other option would be to use something like Clooz. Art At 02:41 PM 7/17/2004, you wrote: >I have made a transcription of the 1790 Census for a town in Excel >2000. Something is wrong somewhere. I have Excel 2000 and I can move the find window by putting the mouse cursor in the title bar, the blue line at the top, pressing the button and dragging it anywhere I want it. Do you mean that you have the surnames in one column, and the given names in another? You can sort the thing on any three columns in Excel. Of course, you would have to put the census number in every line to get it sorted that way again. Bob, have you tried placing your cursor on the title bar of the FIND & REPLACE window, hold down your left mouse key and "drag" the search box out of the way (the cursor has to be in the title bar)? I do that all the time in Excel (or just about any other Microsoft program).
