    3. I run a successful surnames exchange website which manages to hide all email addresses of contributors using an SQL Database to store the information and php to manage the database queries. Persons wishing to contact one of the contributors fill in an on screen form - which is then sent to the contributor who then makes the decision whether or not to continue the contact and give their email address to the enquirer. This does require some knowledge of programming and database management - but if you have a basic graft of simple programming it is not difficult to learn - more importantly it requires the use of web-space and a web server which runs some form of SQL and php (or other database management programming language such as asp or miva. I am very proud of the ability of my site to hold 6000+ email addresses securely and despite attempts to farm addresses from it - none have been successful. On another issue is email addresses getting onto web servers by accident - IMO Rootsweb are guilty of this - rootsweb archives strip email addresses from message headers, however they do not strip email addresses written into the message itself - this includes the from address in replies such as this one - you will notice that I have removed the from address from the original message section to safeguard that from appearing in the archives where it can easily be farmed. If anyone wants advise on writing a site using the technology in this email, or hosting such a site I will be happy to help etc but please request off list Malcolm Hills http://www.county-surnames.co.uk/index.php http://www.monumental-inscriptions.co.uk/index.php > -----Original Message----- > From: D&M_Goodwin > Sent: 05 July 2004 08:21 > To: GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Hiding email address on web sites > > > Hi everyone, > > I would be interested in any thoughts / advice about this : > > I am increasingly swamped by spam which I filter out fairly successfully > using 'message rules' in OE.
