This is just > in case anything goes wrong when you reboot Mr. n.east: When I turn off my computer for the night the question is asked about when to turn off the hard drives. Choices range from never to a number of hours. How should that question be answered to preserve the life of the computer? I turn off my computer between ten and eleven p.m. and when home, I turn it on again about eight a.m. I turn it off when a severe lightning storm arises. Otherwise, I leave it on standby when not in use. Your help appreciated. Fred, Sr.

    3. You will find there are two schools of thoughts on this. Some writers advocate leaving a computer on 24/7. Others are just as adamant about turning the machine off when not in use. Like any machine, parts will wear out. The computer does not have many "moving" parts - drives and fans would be the sum total. The fan will run as long as the computer is switched on. The hard drive on the other hand will be almost dormant if the computer is not being manually used. Fans have bearings and are subject to wear - how long is anybody's guess. The electronics in a computer will wear out over a longer (hopefully) period of time. They are subjected to a surge of power each time the computer is turned. Leaving the computer on 24/7 means they are not subjected to this surge. Then of course, cost comes into the equation. If the machine is on, it's chewing up power. So, if your household budget can stand it, this cost may not be a factor in the decision to turn off the machine when not in u! se. If you are watching "the pennies", turning it off will help keep to a budget. I don't think anyone has determined just which situation is best in prolonging the life of a computer - turning it off or leaving it on 24/7. But if you choose to leave it on, remember the computer does need a re-boot on a regular basis to ensure its keeping everything ship-shape. As for me, well mine usually goes on first thing in the morning and stays on (if I am home) until the evening. > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > Sent: Fri, 29 Dec 2006 08:36:31 -0500 > To: [email protected] > Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] HIBERNATE IN WINDOWS XP > > On 11/28/06, n.east <[email protected]> wrote: >> >> Hibernate is useful because it saves the status of your Windows XP >> "session" (all the programs and documents you have open) to the hard >> drive, >> so it can automatically restore it the next time you power up. 3. I am new to XP (finally converting from Windows 2000 Professional). I have not seen this question. Is there an option that I should have selected, that I haven't. Are there any good "helps" for those of us new to XP? I want to be able to do the "restore" or "recovery" when something has happened, but I don't know if I have to do something special - or if it's automatic.
