    3. I just wanted to start using my Dell laptop for my research. I just booted it to see if all was working. It seems to be working well, but it is hanging up on the Windows XP Logging Off screen. What can I do?

    3. If it is a new laptop, contact Dell technical help. They have done very well by me several times when I've had a problem with the speakers on the old computer or the cord needing replacing on the laptop. (Next day replacement each time!) I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop with XP Home on it and haven't had a problem with it, other than the cord. It is my main research computer since it is newer than the desktop (which runs Windows 95). 3. I have this problem once in a while with my Gateway desktop. I have installed something, maybe my HP all in one printer that messes things up sometimes. This works on my desktop, my HP notebook and will probably work on a Dell too. Check the book, trouble shooting or problems on shut down, probably. Until you find the solution, you can wait a bit after it hangs, maybe a minute or two, at least until you don't hear or see any Hard drive activity, then press and hold the power switch until it goes off. It will cause some delay booting the next time, but causes no namage to the computer as long as nothing is being written to the hard drive. I think that's why you have to hold the button so long, to make extra sure the hard drive isn't working. Alfred D. 3. Hi this can be a common problem it means that something is not closing properly, a quick fix is to type in msconfig in the run box and click selective start up this starts and runs without a stack of stuff that often you dont need running in the background...it often solves shut down problems Shirley W ----- Original Message ----- From: "Shelby" <shelbyw@shelbyawilliams.com> To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 22, 2004 12:08 PM Subject: [Gen-Comp-Tips] Laptop hanging up > I just wanted to start using my Dell laptop for my research.
