I've had the same problem and after some experimenting found a way that worked for me. Try saving the word file as an ordinary (not compressed or filtered) web page (.htm, .html), say to your desktop. On your desktop you will find the htm/html file and a similarly-named directory. The picture files will be in the directory. There may be an easier way, but this should work.
