    1. [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Getting filenames to display in actual numeric order - help please!

    3. One of the Stupid Microsoft Tricks is on me. I cannot get alphanumeric filenames to display in numerical order. For example, I keep some files and file folders on persons and families that have gedcom-type program numbers. So Families I have numbered similarly to F-1, F-2, etc. within surname group. This is fine for F-1 through F-99. But beginning with F-100, Windows displays F-100 through F-109 above F-10, F-110-F119 above F-11 . . . and so forth. This is driving me nuts. It gets purely nonsensensical with higher numbers. How can I get Windows to display these files or folders in actual alphanumeric order? I am running Win98ME with normal Windows Explorer. Any help most gratefully received. Thanks, Judy --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

    3. The cure is rather simple. You need to start the numbering either F001 or F0001. If you think you'll have over 1,000 files with an 'F', go to the F0001. If you think you'll have over 10,000 names, go to F00001. -----Original Message----- From: gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Judy Sent: Friday, May 02, 2008 8:00 PM To: GEN-COMP-TIPS@rootsweb.com Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Getting filenames to display in actual numericorder - help please! 3. Judy I think that all computer systems sort is this manner, it is certainly the way sorting works for most databases. One way is to use leading zeros on your file names. For example, F-0001 ............F-0118. It unfortunately means that all your files have to be re-named.((;-( RecumbentDennis in Chester UK ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy" <frostfree12@yahoo.com> To: <GEN-COMP-TIPS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 03, 2008 1:00 AM Subject: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Getting filenames to display in actual numericorder - help please! > One of the Stupid Microsoft Tricks is on me. 3. Hi Judy, You have to put the leading zeros in, 001, 002, 003, 010, 011, 012 etc. This will look after up to 999 files. If you're going to have thousands, you have to put in extr zeros to cope. Unfortunately computers aren't smart enough to recognise what we can see and understand. Cheers, Robyn Judy wrote: > One of the Stupid Microsoft Tricks is on me.
