    3. It does not occur to quite the same extent in the paid version as I believe that version compares senders' address details against a large Spam database. The rest of the messages are left for the user to mark for blacklisting or friends list. 3. Dennis, before I started using Mailwasher, I used a small notification program called "Pop Man". I don't have any spam problems and the only reason that I use a notification program is to delete large emails that are a problem with dial-up. I have disabled Mailwasher and re-installed Pop Man. I very seldom bounced a message anyway. I might just remove Mailwasher and use the small Pop Man program. It's strange the Mailwasher started that problem all at once. I had been using it over a year with no problem. Thanks for your help. 3. Donna, I have gone to the server and received the mail but I keep so much mail in folders it just don't work out good. I would use a program like Mailwasher if I wasn't on dial-up. 3. Joe Whilst the messages are technically only forwarded by the Rootsweb websites, I think you are correct in suggesting that it is the sender who is identified by MailWasher as an individual subscriber and as such is compared to your individual friends list. I have been unable to find a solution to this problem except that instead of un-checking the delete box I always add the sender to my friends list which has the same effect but also means any further messages from the sender do not get marked for deletion. My ISP also moves some Rootsweb derived messages to a bulk folder as suspected Spam and I have to teach my Spam Guard each day which are OK. The messages sometimes get marked for deletion by Mailwasher. START => All Programs => Accessories => [C:\] Command Prompt You get a little window that looks much like the old DOS screens used to look and act. Alfred D. Jan do you have a USB Stick (AKA Memory Stick) this will do to copy yopu files to this & then then you can transfer those files to the new computer. If you dont have a USB Stick you could burn the files to a CD/DVD &n then copy them across to the new computer. Just let me know whi9ch you have or want to use & Ill send detailed instructions to you. If you mean program files such as Windows then Im afraid it is not possible, to my knowledge, to copy from your hard Drive to another Hard Drive & it work.

    3. Piece of cake. Microsoft have just the tool for you - the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". You can use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows XP to migrate a user's files and settings from one Windows XP-based computer to another Windows XP-based computer. The wizard supports the migration of files and settings from the following operating systems: . Microsoft Windows 95 . Microsoft Windows 98 . Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition . Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) . Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 . Microsoft Windows 2000 The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard can also transfer settings for third-party programs. Note that the wizard does not transfer or install the actual programs, it only transfers the settings for the programs. In order for these settings to take effect on the Windows XP-based computer, the programs must be installed on the target computer before you migrate the settings. For instructions on how to use it - please go to the following Microsoft web-site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293118/EN-US/ A list of applications that have been proven to work with this is given at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304903/en-us regards Chris -----Original Message----- From: gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com]On Behalf Of JHE Sent: 27 March 2008 08:00 To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Help needed with new computer Hi Chris Thanks for that. 3. Hi, I understand that the Vista Operating System has a standard facility for copying settings and data from an XP-based computer. There is very little left to copy by hand. If I remember correctly, "Personal Computer World" magazine had an article on how to move everything with the minimum of hassle, and I'll see if I can find it. If you let us know the operating systems on your old and new computer, then we can help further. 3. Just tried it. Works Well. Thank you Brian NZ -----Original Message----- From: gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:gen-comp-tips-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of n.east Sent: Wednesday, 26 March 2008 1:53 p.m. To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Using Metadata to add info to images (was Labelling photos) People now create large amounts of digital images every day. Frequently those images are shared by transmission over the Internet. Because of this increasing use of digital images, problems arise in the effective use, categorization, cataloging and sharing of these images. One way to overcome this is to make use of a feature known as Metadata. Wikipedia has a short article here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metadata [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metadata] which explains metadata. Metadata are often generated and included in the image files you create with your camera. Currently, almost all digital cameras generate a standardized set of metadata according to a standard known as Exchange Image File Format (EXIF). Under the EXIF standard, as the image file is created, for example as a ".jpg" or ".tif" file, an EXIF header is appended to the file containing metadata about the image. This metadata may include such items as when the image was created, time it was created, the equipment and settings used, etc. How do you find this EXIF information? If you right click any image you have on your computer from your digital camera, then click on Properties, you should be able to find it by clicking on the "Summary" tab at the top of the screen. This will probably display a "Simple" screen showing very little at all. If you click the "Advanced" button down the bottom, it will reveal a screen which will (hopefully) be full of interesting data (metadata in fact), such as that described above. Now that data may not be a full description of your image, but the Advanced Summary tab allows you to do a bit of editing. Down the bottom of the Advanced screen you will see the heading "Description", with sub-headings of "Title", "Subject", "Keywords" and "Comments". Below this "Description" section you will see "Origin" with the sub-heading "Author". At first it does not appear that there is anywhere against any of those headings which will allow you to type anything. If you click on the middle of the space out from any one of those sub-folders, this will open a text box against that heading, into which you can type or paste any appropriate text. When you have finished click "Apply" and/or "OK". The information you added is now retained with that image, and will be revealed to anyone when they examine the Properties of that image. Metadata is not just confined to images. If you examine the "Summary" tab in "Properties" of say, a Word document you have created, you will see a similar display, but with different headings. Admittedly, it does take time to add that additional information to images, but the end results are well worth the effort if you want to preserve vital information. ____________________________________________________________ GET FREE 5GB EMAIL - Check out spam free email with many cool features! Thank you for this. While I knew that my Canon camera stored the settings used to capture the image, and that these were available to me when I view the image in Adobe's Photoshop application, I was not aware that they were also available from Windows. I was also not aware that one could add data such as title, author etc. Thank you for sharing this with me. Chris

    3. Yes, IPTC was originally developed for use in new organizations but it's commonly used in other ways now. There's a Windows IPTC add-on called Photo Info which is freely available at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/photoinfo.mspx There are a variety of fields available. For simpler purposes, keywords, captions and copyright notices would be the most commonly used. EXIF is camera information that is automatically embedded in digital photos and shows in all applications that I've seen. The added info in Windows File Properties that you're suggesting do not. Sometimes people do use other editors and viewers and why be limited if you don't have to be? Neither is Windows File Properties importable into other software used in genealogy. For instance, Legacy Family Tree will import IPTC captions into it's photo fields when linking pictures. So will Passage Express. If you wanted the same result from Windows File Properties you'd have to copy and paste the descriptions one by one. Picasa2 is free and writes both IPTC keywords and captions to jpg's and uncompressed tiff's. Emailing photos with IPTC-info works just fine as long as you don't allow Windows to resize the photos before mailing. Just click the "Keep Original Sizes" box. If you're sending large batches, you can use something like a free YouSendIt account which allows files up to 100 MB at one time. This feature is instantly available with a few clicks without the need to resort to any third party application. This makes the task reasonably simple for the average home user. > > IPTC data requires a third party application to complete its data fields. Applications such as Photoshop, ACDSee Pro 2, ACDSee 10 Photo Manager, and others allow this. There are many applications which will display both EXIF and IPTC data, but will not allow it to be edited in anyway (Picasa2 and Ulead Photo Explorer comes to mind). Some of the major applications, like the first ones mentioned above, will allow "batch" editing of images to add both IPTC and EXIF data. IPTC data does not show by default the technical information saved from the camera in its EXIF file. It has to be added if needed. There would be many members of this list who do not have an application capable of adding IPTC data, but they can access Properties in Windows quite freely, to add to EXIF data already there. > > As most members of this list are users of one of the versions of Windows, and I am sure most of the people they exchange images with are also Windows users, the EXIF data will be available to those recipients. If they went to the trouble of adding just IPTC data to their images they email as attachments, there would be nothing to show for all their hard work when it is received. > > The IPTC standard is necessary for photographers and artists dealing with news organizations and is accepted as the standard in those industries. The average member of this list would not, in their lifetime, have dealings with media organizations, I am sure. Even in those organizations, there are different requirements for the IPTC fields. Newspapers may require different fields to say, magazines. Those dealing with news organizations would be well aware of the requirements needed by any they deal with regularly. > > So, in saying EXIF is "not recommended" (for members of this list I assume) that could be true if the members of this list were all Mac users; sending their attachments only to Mac users; or dealing with news organizations on a regular basis. But, in the world of the genealogist and home computer users who inhabit this list, EXIF data is a readily available way of adding information to their images without a lot of hassles (and no cost). Most would want to keep it that simple, I am sure. > > -----Original Message----- > From: jgen@telus.net > Sent: Tue, 25 Mar 2008 19:49:19 -0700 > To: gen-comp-tips@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [GEN-COMP-TIPS] Using Metadata to add info to images (was > Labelling photos) > > File Properties, as described below, is a Windows-only feature, not > IPTC, in other words it is not a standard way of labeling photos and > therefore limited in its application.
